Drag Performances
A drag show is a form of entertainment performed by drag artists impersonating men or women, typically in a bar or nightclub as a burlesque-style, adult-themed nightclub event. The modern drag show originated in the speakeasies and underground bars of 1920s and 1930s Prohibition America, in what was known as the Pansy Craze. Drag became a part of gay culture and a form of entertainment usually enjoyed by adults in bars. Typically, a drag show involves performers singing or lip-synching to songs while performing a pre-planned pantomime or dancing. There might also be some comedy, skits, and audience interaction. The performers are often given cash tips by the audience members. The performers often don elaborate costumes and makeup, and sometimes dress to imitate various famous opposite sex singers or personalities. Young male dancers have often been included. After Dark (1976–2018) was a Swedish drag act starring entertainer Christer Lindarw who eventually also began appearing intermittently out of drag and singing with his own voice. Show history The group was put together for a special Stockholm nightclub called After Dark Club immediately after Lindarw with Roger Jönsson had appeared in ''Wild Side Story'' at Alexandra's in January 1976 and also in February, with an added co-star . Its immediate appeal with Alexandra's clientele has been cited as instrumental to rapid and early success. Since that time, After Dark has been a major ingredient in Swedish LGBT culture. Dorian Corey (June 6, 1937 – August 29, 1993) was an American drag performer and fashion designer. She appeared in ''Wigstock'' and was featured in Jennie Livingston's 1990 documentary '' Paris Is Burning''. Early life and education Corey was born in Buffalo, New York to Franklin Legg and Mary Fox Clark out of wedlock, though they later married on October 18, 1947. The Regal Theater was a night club, theater, and music venue, popular among African Americans, located in the Bronzeville neighborhood in Chicago, Illinois. The theater was designed by Edward Eichenbaum, and opened in February 1928. It closed in 1968 and was demolished in 1973. The Uptown Theater is an Art Deco building built in 1927. It is situated in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Designed by the Philadelphia-based architectural firm of Magaziner, Eberhard & Harris, the theatre is located on 2240 N. Broad Street (Philadelphia), Broad Street. It became a major venue on the Chitlin' Circuit, from 1951 to 1978. In 1982, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
