West Frisian (; ), or simply Frisian ( ; ), is a West Germanic language spoken mostly in the province of Friesland () in the north of the Netherlands, mostly by those of Frisians, Frisian ancestry. It is the most widely spoken of the Frisian languages. Douwe Amels
Douwe Jorn Amels (; born 16 September 1991) is a Dutch track and field athlete who specialises in the high jump. He won the gold medal at the 2023 European Indoor Championships, becoming the first Dutchman ever to win gold in the event and the first Dutch high jump medallist at these championships since 1977. Amels claimed also gold at the 2013 European Under-23 Championships. He represented Netherlands at the World Championships in Athletics in 2013 and 2019. He is the joint Dutch indoor record holder for the high jump, and won over 20 national titles (outdoors and indoors). Douwe Aukes
Douwe Aukes (c. 1612–1668) was a Frisian sea captain of the Dutch East India Company or VOC. The Douwe Aukes class minelayer and its name-ship the HNLMS ''Douwe Aukes'' were named after him. Life He was the son of another VOC captain, also called Douwe Aukes. He made several trips to South Africa on the ships ''Maastricht'' and ''Vrede'' and in 1641 he was made captain of the 40-gun ''Vogelstruys'' of the VOC's Amsterdam Chamber, which was seconded to Michiel de Ruyter's fleet in 1652 during the First Anglo-Dutch War (with Aukes thus indirectly becoming a naval officer). At one point during the Battle of Plymouth he wandered from the Dutch fleet and was almost surrounded by English ships, but Aukes threatened to ignite a powder keg and blow up the ship, rather than surrender. His crew then managed to beat off an English boarding party, almost sink two English ships, badly damage a third and finally regain the main Dutch fleet. Douwe Blumberg (pronounced "Dow", born January 30, 1965) is a bronze sculptor who is most well known for his statue of a America's Response Monument, special forces soldier on horseback commemorating Special Forces operations in Afghanistan during the opening days of Operation Enduring Freedom. He has received more than 200 commissions and a number of awards since becoming a sculptor in 2000. He attended the University of Southern California and studied at the Idyllwild Arts Foundation, Idyllwild School of Music and the Arts. He was a horse trainer for 18 years before he became a sculptor. Personal life Blumberg was born in Los Angeles, California. Douwe Durk Breimer (born 24 November 1943 in Oudemirdum, Netherlands) is a Dutch pharmacologist and was both rector magnificus and president of the Executive Board of Leiden University, The Netherlands. Breimer studied pharmacology at the University of Groningen (1962–1970) and obtained his Ph.D. from the Catholic University of Nijmegen. In 1975, he was appointed professor of pharmacology at Leiden University. His research focusses on pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics and drug metabolism. Breimer co-authored over 500 scientific papers and supervised more than 50 Ph.D. students. Douwe Eisenga (born 1961, in Apeldoorn) is a Dutch composer. His most known work is ''Requiem Aeternam 1953'', composed on an occasion of the 50th North Sea flood of 1953 anniversary. Eisenga is a self-taught musician and has begun composing music for theatre and films in 1980s. From 1990 to 1996, he studied composition with Julius Ament and Wim Dirriwachter at Prince Claus Conservatoire in Groningen. In the last years, he composed various works for musical ensembles as Xenakis Ensemble, Francis B. Quartet or the pianists Gerard Bouwhuis and Marcel Worms. Douwe Korff (born 17 April 1951, in Amsterdam) has been professor of international law at London Metropolitan University since 2002. He is a Dutch comparative and international lawyer, specialising in human rights and data protection. In the 1970s, he graduated from the Free University in Amsterdam, Netherlands, and was researcher at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy. In the 1980s, he carried out human rights research at the Max Planck Institutes for comparative and international criminal law and for comparative and international public law in Freiburg im Breisgau and Heidelberg, Germany. Jonkheer Douwe Sirtema van Grovestins (24 December 1710 – 26 February 1778) was a Frisian courtier at the court of stadtholder William IV, Prince of Orange, and later at the court of his widow Anne, Princess Royal and Princess of Orange. He was first Chamberlain, later Equerry to the stadtholder, and equerry to the Princess after her husband's death. Douwe was married to Baroness Carolina Sinoldt genannt Schütz (whose curio cabinet in The Hague is shown in a picture from 1756) and had two sons with her: (1740-1813), gouvernour of Demarara (1793–1795), and Lodewijk Idzard Douwe (1749-1806).
