Flying disc sports are sports or games played with discs, often called by the trademarked name Frisbees. Ultimate and disc golf are sports with substantial international followings. History The flying disc was developed in 1948 by Walter Morrison. On January 23, 1957, Wham-O bought the rights to the invention and released it later under the trademarked name Frisbee. Although playing catch with discs as a pastime and proto-golf games are documented from the early 1900s, and doubtlessly occurred from time to time before, disc sports began to flower in the late 1960s. Joel Silver
Joel Silver (born July 14, 1952) is an American film producer. Life and career Silver was born and raised in South Orange, New Jersey, the son of a writer and a public relations executive. His family is Jewish. He attended Columbia High School in Maplewood, New Jersey. During his time there, Silver, Buzzy Hellring, and Jonny Hines created the rules for what he called " Ultimate Frisbee". He was later inducted into the USA Ultimate Hall of Fame as a result of this. He finished his undergraduate studies at the New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. Silver began his career at Lawrence Gordon Productions, where he eventually became president of motion pictures for the company. Hot Box (game)
Hot Box (or simply Box) is a non-contact team sport which is similar to ultimate, but played on a smaller field and with fewer players. Like ultimate, the object of the game is to score points by passing the disc into the end zone; however, in Hot Box there is generally only one end zone and it is of much smaller size than an Ultimate end zone. In this way, hot box is a "half-court" variant of ultimate. Because of these reduced requirements, it is often played when not enough players are available to play ultimate. Rules For the most part, hot box follows the rules of play of ultimate. Goaltimate
Goaltimate is a half-court disc game derived from ultimate, similar to hot box. The object is to score points by throwing a flying disc to a teammate in a small scoring area, through a large semicircular hoop called the goal. The name is a portmanteau of "goal" and "ultimate". History Goaltimate was invented by players of ultimate in Wellesley, Massachusetts. It was invented on Christmas Day around 1980, on hard-pack snow, after not enough players for ultimate showed up. It was originally played between the lower spars of a set of H-shaped football uprights. Jim Herrick, one of the Boston inventors, brought the game to San Diego, where it was further developed and replaced the uprights with a large hoop made with PVC pipes. In 1999, Rick and Bibbi Conner, San Diego entrepreneurs with interest in the sport, subsidized a goaltimate tournament with a US$30,000 purse for the winners, inviting top players from competitive ultimate teams. Major League Ultimate
Major League Ultimate (MLU) was a North American semi-professional Ultimate (sport), ultimate league from 2013 to 2016. It was composed of eight member teams, seven in the United States and one in Canada. It was formed in 2012, and began its inaugural season in April 2013. History The Philadelphia Spinners left the American Ultimate Disc League at the end of the 2012 season after disagreements on how it was run. With the help of their staff, including former general manager, GM Jeff Snader, and a core group of individuals now referred to as the Founders, the MLU was created in 2012. American Ultimate Disc League
The Ultimate Frisbee Association (UFA) is a professional ultimate league in North America. The league comprises 24 teams divided between the South, Central, East, and West divisions. Each UFA season has 12 regular season games which run from April to July. Following the conclusion of the regular season, the top three teams from every division advance to the playoffs, a single elimination tournament that culminates in a final four style showcase known as the UFA Championship Weekend, which is contested in late August over two days. The UFA was founded in 2012 as the American Ultimate Disc League (AUDL), before renaming itself the Ultimate Frisbee Association for the 2024 season. Ultimate Canada is a not-for-profit organization that serves as the governing body of the sport of Ultimate (also known as "Ultimate Frisbee") in Canada.
