Within the European Union (EU), Directorates-General are departments with specific zones of responsibility. Within the European Commission specifically, Directorates-General are the equivalent of national-level Ministry (government department), ministries. Most are headed by a European commissioner, responsible for the general direction of the Directorate-General, and in charge of (politically responsible for) the corresponding policy area; and a director-general, responsible for the management of day-to-day affairs, who reports to the European Commissioner. Nearly all of the top-level organisational divisions of the Secretariat of the European Parliament and the General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union are also termed Directorates-General. List Of European Commission Portfolios
A portfolio in the European Commission is an area of responsibility assigned to a European Commissioner, usually connected to one or several Directorates-General (DGs). Portfolios Agriculture The Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development is in charge of rural issues including most notably the controversial Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) which represents 44% of the EU budget. The European Commission (EC) is the primary Executive (government), executive arm of the European Union (EU). The Secretariat of the European Parliament is the administrative body of the European Parliament headed by a Secretary-General. It is based in the Kirchberg district of Luxembourg City and around Brussels-Luxembourg railway station in Brussels and employs around 4,000 officials. General Secretariat Of The Council Of The European Union
The General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union (GSC), also known as Council Secretariat, assists the Council of the European Union, the presidency of the Council of the European Union, the European Council and the president of the European Council. The General Secretariat is headed by the secretary-general of the Council of the European Union. The Secretariat is divided into eight directorates-general, each administered by a director-general. Other two departments are administered by deputy directors-general. The Secretariat is based in Brussels, in the Europa building and the Justus Lipsius building. The Directorate-General for Energy (DG Ener), or ENER, is a Directorate-General of the European Commission, created on 17 February 2010 when it was separated from the Transport DG, with which it had been combined since 2000. Mission The Directorate-General for Energy is responsible for promoting and regulating the European Energy Union and, since 2019, overseeing the implementation of the Clean Energy for all Europeans package as part of the European Green New Deal. The Directorate-General for Climate Action (DG CLIMA), est. 2010, is a Directorate-General of the European Commission responsible for EU's international negotiations on climate, development and implementation of the EU Emissions Trading System and production of the " European Green Deal" transformation plan. As of 2023 it is headed by Kurt Vandenberghe. The 2022 Commissioner was Frans Timmermans (DG head Mauro Petriccione).
