Archdiocese Of Vienna
The Archdiocese of Vienna () is a Latin Church archdiocese of the Catholic Church in Austria. It was erected as the Diocese of Vienna on 18 January 1469 out of the Diocese of Passau, and elevated to an archdiocese on 1 June 1722. The episcopal see is situated in the cathedral of Stephansdom, St. Stephen in Vienna. The Archdiocese is the metropolitan diocese of three suffragan dioceses: Roman Catholic Diocese of Eisenstadt, Roman Catholic Diocese of Linz, of Linz, and Roman Catholic Diocese of Sankt Pölten, of Sankt Pölten. The ''Basilika'' (, "the imperial aws) was a collection of laws completed in Constantinople by order of the Byzantine emperor Leo VI the Wise during the Macedonian dynasty. This was a continuation of the efforts of his father, Basil I, to simplify and adapt the Emperor Justinian I's ''Corpus Juris Civilis'' code of law issued between 529 and 534 which had become outdated. The Catholic Church in Austria is part of the worldwide Catholic Church in full communion with the Pope in Rome. The Church's governing body in Austria is the Austrian Conference of Catholic Bishops, made up of the hierarchy of the two archbishops (Vienna and Salzburg), the bishops and the abbot of territorial abbey of Wettingen-Mehrerau. Friedrich Gustav Piffl (15 October 1864 – 21 April 1932) was a Cardinal of the Catholic Church and Archbishop of Vienna. Early life and education Gustav Piffl was born in Lanškroun, Bohemia, in what was then the Austrian Empire. His father, Rudolf Piffl, was a bookseller and shopkeeper. He volunteered for a year in the Austrian army as a young man. After deciding to become a priest he enrolled in the Teutonic College of Santa Maria in Camposanto in Rome and later became an Augustinian canon at the Abbey of Klosterneuburg, Austria, in 1883. His name in religion was Friedrich. He finished his theological studies at the University of Vienna. Priesthood He was ordained on 8 January 1888 and served afterwards as a priest in various parishes of the Archdiocese of Vienna. Theodor Innitzer (25 December 1875 – 9 October 1955) was Archbishop of Vienna and a cardinal of the Catholic Church. Early life Innitzer was born in Neugeschrei (Nové Zvolání), part of the town Weipert (Vejprty) in Bohemia, at that time Austria-Hungary, (now Czech Republic). He was the son of a passementier Wilhelm Innitzer in Vejprty, later a textile factory worker, and his wife Maria born Seidl, daughter of a mining clerk. After completing the minimum mandatory school, Innitzer became an apprentice in a textile factory.
