Dinah Nichols
Dinah Nichols CB (born 1943) is a retired British civil servant and public administrator. She is known for her 35-year career in the UK Civil Service, including senior roles in the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), leading the UK delegation to the Kyoto Climate Conference and the World Summit on Sustainable Development, and as Chair of Keep Britain Tidy. Early life and education Nichols studied History at Bedford College, London from 1962 to 1965, becoming the first in her family to attend university. She was awarded the Reid Arts Scholarship as an undergraduate, sang in the Imperial College Choir, performed with the ULU Gilbert and Sullivan Society, and served as Treasurer of the Students’ Union. Bedford College, London
Bedford College was founded in London in 1849 as the first higher education college for women in the United Kingdom. In 1900, it became a constituent of the University of London. Having played a leading role in the advancement of women in higher education and public life in general, it became fully coeducational (i.e. open to men) in the 1960s. Kyoto Protocol
The was an international treaty which extended the 1992 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) that commits state parties to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, based on the scientific consensus that global warming is occurring and that human-made CO2 emissions are driving it. The Kyoto Protocol was adopted in Kyoto, Japan, on 11 December 1997 and entered into force on 16 February 2005. There were 192 parties (Canada withdrew from the protocol, effective December 2012) to the Protocol in 2020. The World Summit on Sustainable Development 2002, took place in South Africa, from 26 August to 4 September 2002. Keep Britain Tidy is a UK-based independent environmental charity. The organisation campaigns to reduce litter, improve local places and prevent waste. It has offices in Wigan and London. History Keep Britain Tidy was originally set up by a conference of 26 organisations in 1955. The conference was initiated by the British Women's Institute after a resolution was passed at its 1954 AGM to start a national anti-litter campaign. In 1987, Keep Britain Tidy changed its name to Tidy Britain Group. In 2002, following a merger with environmental awareness charity, Going for Green, the charity changed its name to ENCAMS — short for Environmental Campaigns. From the 1990s, of north Leicestershire, south Derbyshire and southeast Staffordshire have been planted in an attempt to blend ancient woodland with newly planted areas to create a new national forest.
