2017 Sichuan Landslide
A landslide occurred at about 05:38 local time on 24 June 2017 in Diexi Town, Mao County, Sichuan Province in south-western China. It destroyed 40 homes in Xinmo Village and killed 10 people, with a further 73 people missing, as of 27 June. A second smaller landslide at around 17:19 impeded rescue efforts. Background The location of Mao County between the Tibetan Plateau and the Sichuan Basin is characterized by deep mountain canyons with exposed batholith. In 1933, the landslide site became especially unstable after the 7.3-magnitude Diexi earthquake, whose epicenter was only a few kilometers away from Xinmo Village. Major geological hazards occur on almost a yearly basis. Ngawa Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, also known as Aba, where Mao County is located, was one of the regions worst affected by the 2008 Sichuan earthquake. 1933 Diexi Earthquake
The 1933 Diexi earthquake occurred in Diexi, Mao County, Sichuan, Republic of China on August 25 with a moment magnitude of 7.3 and a maximum Mercalli intensity of X (''Extreme''). With up to 9,300 killed, this was the deadliest earthquake in 1933. This earthquake destroyed the town of Diexi and surrounding villages, and caused many landslides.
