Determinations (film)
''Determinations'' is a Canadian experimental documentary film, directed by Oliver Hockenhull and released in 1987.Calvin Wharton, "Oliver Hockenhull's Determinations". Examining the media coverage of the Squamish Five, a direct-action group who were convicted and jailed in the Litton Industries bombing, the film is a personal essay about contemporary culture's ambivalent relationship with violence and its embrace of the military-industrial complex. Production The film blends news footage with sequences of animation, shadow dance and spoken-word poetry performance, and scripted dramatic vignettes, blending both traditional and avant-garde filmmaking techniques. Cinema Canada
''Cinema Canada'' (1972–1989) is a defunct Canadian film magazine, which served as the trade journal of record for the Canadian film and television sector. The magazine had its origins in the Canadian Society of Cinematographers (CSC), which began publishing a bi-monthly newsletter under the name ''Canadian Cinematography'' in 1962. In 1967, the publication's name was changed to ''Cinema Canada''. In 1972, the CSC approached George Csaba Koller and Phillip McPhedran of Toronto to produce a glossier format. However, this association lasted only four issues, after which McPhedran resigned for personal reasons. Koller continued to edit and publish the magazine, which became independent of the CSC in the fall of 1973. It was scrappy, provocative and ashamedly nationalistic. Squamish Five
The Squamish Five (sometimes referred to as the Vancouver Five) were a group of self-styled " urban guerrillas" active in Canada during the early 1980s. Their chosen name was Direct Action. The five were Ann Hansen, Brent Taylor, Juliet Caroline Belmas, Doug Stewart and Gerry Hannah. Campaigns The group's first action was in 1982: vandalizing the British Columbia Ministry of Environment offices. They began training with stolen weapons in a deserted area north of Vancouver and stole a large cache of dynamite belonging to the Department of Highways. On the morning of May 30, 1982, Hansen, Taylor, and Stewart travelled to Vancouver Island and set off a large bomb at the Dunsmuir BC Hydro substation. Judy Radul
Judy Radul (born in 1962 in Lillooet, British Columbia) is a Canadian multidisciplinary artist, writer and educator. She is known for her performance art and media installations, as well as her critical writing. Biography She has exhibited her work around the world, and recently participated in the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst program in Berlin. She is currently a professor at Simon Fraser University, in the School for Contemporary Arts and is represented by the Catriona Jeffries Gallery. Gerry Hannah
Gerald Richard Hannah (also known as Gerry Useless; birthdate unknown) is a Canadian musician who was the bass guitarist for the Canadian punk rock group The Subhumans. Hannah was also a member of the armed revolutionary group known as the Squamish Five. Musical career Hannah was a member of the Vancouver-based punk rock band The Subhumans from 1978 to 1981. Also "Useless" was a member of The Stiffs. He reunited with his ex-bandmates for a few shows in 1995 and was part of an extended reunion between 2005 and 2010. The Subhumans were best known for their 1980 album ''Incorrect Thoughts''. The Subhumans also released ''New Dark Age Parade'' in 2006 and ''Death was too Kind'' in 2008.
