Derlwyn Mawr
Dunvant (, and ) is a suburban district and community in the City and County of Swansea, Wales, and falls within the Dunvant ward. It is situated in a valley some 4.5 miles west of Swansea city centre. The population as of the 2011 census was 4,383. It adjoins the area of Killay. History Dunvant started out as a small village based around the coal industry. The area between Dunvant and Gowerton was once quite heavily industrialised. with four nearby collieries Killan, Bishwell, Bryn Mawr and Dunvant. Bishwell and Bryn Mawr to the south of Gowerton were short-lived and closed in the 1870s. However, the collieries in Dunvant have a longer history. Dunvant closed again in 1914. Killan ceased operations in 1925 following the disaster of 1924 in which five men were killed. At its peak it employed 900 men. Community (Wales)
A community () is a division of land that forms the lowest tier of local government in Wales. Shrewsbury
Shrewsbury ( , ) is a market town and civil parish in Shropshire (district), Shropshire, England. It is sited on the River Severn, northwest of Wolverhampton, west of Telford, southeast of Wrexham and north of Hereford. At the 2021 United Kingdom census, 2021 census, the parish had a population of 76,782. It is the county town of the ceremonial county of Shropshire. Granville Beynon
Sir William John Granville Beynon, CBE, FRS (24 May 1914 in Dunvant – 11 March 1996 in Aberystwyth) was a Welsh physicist. He co-operated with Sir Edward Victor Appleton, who had detected the terrestrial Ionosphere. Life history William John Granville Beynon was born in Dunvant, near Swansea, Wales on 24 May 1914, the youngest of four children. His father, a miner, held the responsible jobs of checkweightman and chief of the local mines rescue service. Beynon was educated at Gowerton Grammar School, before matriculating to the University of Swansea, where he studied physics. In 1938 he gained a position at National Physical Laboratory at Slough, near London, working closely with Sir Edward Appleton. Together they performed basic studies of radio wave propagation by reflection from these layers. National Cycle Network
The National Cycle Network (NCN) was established to encourage cycling and walking throughout the United Kingdom, as well as for the purposes of bicycle touring. It was created by the charity Sustrans who were aided by a £42.5 million National Lottery (United Kingdom), National Lottery grant. However Sustrans themselves only own around 2% of the paths on the network, the rest being made of existing public highways and rights of way, and permissive paths negotiated by Sustrans with private landowners. In 2017, the Network was used for over 786 million cycling and walking trips, made by 4.4 million people. In 2020, around a quarter of the NCN was scrapped on safety grounds, leaving of signed routes. These are made up of of traffic-free paths with the remaining on-road. Dunvant Male Choir
Dunvant Male Choir () is the oldest continuously singing Welsh choir and is based in Dunvant, Swansea, Wales. History The choir was founded in 1895, in the country traditionally known as the "land of song".Davies (2008), pg 579. Dunvant RFC
Dunvant Rugby Football Club are a Welsh rugby union club based in Dunvant, Swansea in South Wales. Dunvant RFC is a member of the Welsh Rugby Union. They competed in the Welsh Championship for the first time in 2016/2017, but were relegated back to the WRU Division One West the same season. In the 2024/25 season, the 1st XV will play in the WRU Championship West. The Athletic will have their first season in the national leagues competing in the WRU 5 West Central league. On May 17th 2024, Dunvant seniors won the West Wales Rugby Union Cup defeating Gowerton RFC. This was 24 years to the day since they first won the trophy beating Llandovery. Hendrefoilan
Hendrefoilan is an area in Swansea, South Wales. The area overlaps northwest Sketty and east Killay, Swansea, Killay communities. The western part is often known as 'Student Village', which lies on the west bank of the Olchfa Stream, in the suburb of Killay. It was part of a satellite campus of Swansea University and consisted of a number of flats which were let out to university students. However, in 2022 the site was sold, and as of 2024 is being developed as a modern housing estate. History The main feature on the campus is Hendrefoelan House, a large private house built in 1853 by William B. Colling for Lewis Llewelyn Dillwyn (1814–92) then the Swansea District (UK Parliament constituency), Member of Parliament for Swansea and home for many years to his daughter, the novelist and industrialist Amy Dillwyn. Olchfa School
Olchfa School () is the largest secondary school in Swansea, South Wales, with approximately 1,900 pupils, including a sixth form of over 400 students. Situated in Sketty Park to the west of Sketty, it provides secondary education for GCSE and A-Level qualifications. In 2024, it was named one of the top 100 state secondary schools in the UK. Olchfa (part of the Sketty Swansea suburb) means 'washing place' in the English language. Around 12% of pupils have a special educational need and 1.7% have a statement of special educational needs. Both of these figures are below the Welsh averages of 21.5% and 2% respectively. 2022 Welsh Local Elections
The 2022 Welsh local elections took place on 5 May 2022 to elect members of all twenty-two local authorities in Wales. They were held alongside 2022 United Kingdom local elections, other local elections in the United Kingdom. The previous elections were held in 2017 Welsh local elections, 2017. The Welsh Conservatives lost over a third of their seats and their majority on Monmouthshire County Council. Plaid Cymru won outright control of four councils, which was the highest number in the party's history, however their overall number of councillors elected decreased.
