Demerara-Mahaica
Demerara-Mahaica (Region 4) is a region of Guyana, bordering the Atlantic Ocean to the north, the region of Mahaica-Berbice to the east, the region of Upper Demerara-Berbice to the south and the region of Essequibo Islands-West Demerara to the west. It contains the country's capital Georgetown. Notable villages in the region include Buxton, Enmore, Victoria and Paradise. Population The Government of Guyana has administered three official censuses since the 1980 administrative reforms, in 1980, 1991 and 2002. Even though this administrative region is the smallest, it has the largest population out of all Guyana's Administrative Regions. Belfield, Guyana
Belfield is a village in the Demerara-Mahaica Region of Guyana, standing on the Atlantic coast, three kilometres west of Enmore, Guyana, Enmore. The first section of the Demerara-Berbice Railway, from Georgetown, Guyana, Georgetown to Plaisance, Guyana, Plaisance, was opened on 3 November 1848. The extension to Belfield was completed in 1854. Nabacalis
Nabaclis also Nabacalis is a community on the East Coast of Demerara, in the Demerara-Mahaica region. It is in low-lying country by the coast, which is subject to flooding in the rainy season. The local tradition for the name of the village claims that residents opposed the list of potential names to honor colonial-era leaders. In distaste, residents choose to encourage each other to “nah back d list". The main economic activities of the village are small businesses and farming, and many households rely on remittances. The community is served by the Dr. CC Nicholson Hospital, but as of 2012 it was not staffed with doctors around the clock. The hospital was established as a medical center in 1994 with funds from the London-based Cyril Charles Nicholson Foundation, and the government began to upgrade it in 2003 to give residents of Nabaclis and nearby communities an alternative to going into Georgetown for treatment. Lusignan, Guyana
Lusignan is a community in Demerara-Mahaica region of Guyana and approximately 16 km from the capital city Georgetown. Buxton, Guyana
Buxton is a village in the Demerara-Mahaica Region of Guyana, standing about midway between Georgetown and Enmore. History Buxton Village was founded in 1840 by a group of freed Afro-Guyanese, who purchased the former Plantation New Orange Nassau, and named it after Fowell Buxton. Jonestown, Mahaica
Jonestown is a village in the Demerara-Mahaica region of Guyana. The old name of the village was Voorzigtigheid. The village is located 37.5 kilometres (24 miles) from Georgetown, Guyana, Georgetown between Hand-en-Veldt and the Atlantic Ocean, and near the town of Mahaica. Therefore, it tends to be called "Jonestown, Mahaica" or "Jonestown, Mahaica, ECD", even today, although by current Guyanese administrative regions it is in Demerara-Mahaica. Triumph, Guyana
Triumph is a village and regional capital of the Demerara-Mahaica region in Guyana. Paradise, Guyana, Paradise used to be the regional capital, however the administrative building burnt down in 2006. In 2009, a decision was made to rebuild in Triumph, which has therefore become the regional capital. In 1842, the area next to Beterverwagting was bought by Lambert Christian and named Triumph. Christian ran into financial problems, and the people of Beterverwagting tried to buy the land in two terms. The government stepped in and bought the land. The villagers aided by the local newspaper resisted, but to no avail. Triumph and Beterverwagting have since then grown together, and are often referred to as Beterverwagting/Triumph. Better Hope
Better Hope is a village located in the Demerara-Mahaica region of Guyana. The village has been named after the Plantation Betterhoop.
