Dean Callaway
Dean James Callaway (born 10 December 1970) is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1990s and 2000s. Callaway's position of choice was as a . He played for Illawarra in Australia and London Broncos in the Super League. Playing career Callaway made his first grade debut for Illawarra in Round 10 1991 against Manly-Warringah at WIN Stadium. In 1997, Callaway made 15 appearances as Illawarra reached the finals by finishing 6th. Callaway played in their elimination final defeat against the Gold Coast. In 1998, Callaway made 19 appearances in what would prove to be Illawarra's final season in the top grade. Callaway captained the side in their final ever game which was in Round 24 1998 which ended in a 25–24 loss against Canterbury-Bankstown at WIN Stadium. Illawarra Steelers
The Illawarra Steelers are an Australian rugby league football club based in the city of Wollongong, New South Wales. The club competed in Australia's top-level rugby league competition from 1982 until 1998. On 13 December 1980, they were the first non-Sydney based team to be admitted into the New South Wales Rugby League premiership, with the Canberra Raiders being admitted later ensuring an even number of teams in the competition for the start of their first season, 1982. The Illawarra Rugby League is a rugby league competition in Wollongong, NSW. It is one of the oldest rugby league competitions in Australia, founded in 1911 with five clubs (Dapto, Helensburgh, Mount Keira, Unanderra and Wollongong). The area provides a nursery of juniors for the Illawarra Steelers and St George Illawarra Dragons. The season is contested by seven teams and concludes with a finals series involving the top four teams. History Only the Northern parts of the Illawarra have traditionally been included in this competition, with teams further south playing in Group 7 Rugby League, Group 7. The harder they buck, the more desirable they are for rodeo events. The Dapto Canaries are an Australian rugby league football team based in the Wollongong suburb of Dapto. The club are a part of Country Rugby League and have competed in the Illawarra Rugby League premiership since its inception in 1911. History, colours and emblem The Dapto Canaries were established in 1911 and are one of five founding clubs of the Illawarra Rugby League. However, it took the Canaries many decades to win their first title in 1966, and they have been strong competitors ever since. The Canaries won four premierships in five years during the 1970s, and a further three in each of the 80s and 90s.
