De Smet, South Dakota
De Smet is a city in and the county seat of Kingsbury County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 1,089 at the 2010 census. History Located in the area of South Dakota known as "East River" (east of the Missouri River, which diagonally divides the state), De Smet was platted by European Americans in 1880. It was named for Belgian Father Pierre De Smet, a 19th-century Jesuit missionary who worked with Native Americans in the United States and its territories for most of his life. In the mid 1880s, prairie fires and failures of crops after a three-year period of drought caused many settlers to relocate their farms and homesteads to easier areas. By 1917, De Smet was a cow town, with many trains passing through every day carrying cattle to market. The Charles Ingalls family, originally of Wisconsin, arrived in De Smet in 1879. De Smet (also spelled Desmet) is an unincorporated census-designated place in the northwestern United States, located on the Coeur d'Alene Reservation in Benewah County, Idaho. U.S. Route 95 passes nearby and the community is located about a mile (1.6 km) south of Tensed, which was originally also to be titled Desmet before the name was ordered to be reversed and was subsequently misspelled by the post office. Latah Creek flows between the two communities. De Smet has a post office with a ZIP code of 83824. As of the 2010 census, its population was 145, and its elevation is approximately above sea level. The Desmet Method (also known as Desmetcolor) is a method for restoring the colours of early silent films, which had originally been subjected to the processes of either: * Film tinting – a process that suffuses the entire image a single colour * Toning – a process that colours only the dark parts of the image * A combination of the two It was developed by Noël Desmet, a film archivist and restorer working for the ''Cinémathèque Royale de Belgique'' in Brussels, Belgium. De Smet Jesuit High School is a Catholic, college preparatory high school for boys located in Creve Coeur, Missouri, in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Saint Louis. The school began classes in the fall of 1967. It was named in honor of the prominent Belgian Jesuit Great Plains missionary Pierre-Jean De Smet. Academics Honors courses are offered in math, English, foreign language, social studies, fine arts, and science, totaling 130 college credit hours. Honors students average a score of 31 on the ACT, and grades for honors courses are weighted when calculating grade-point average.
