In computing, the Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) is an Internet standard protocol (computing), protocol used by email clients to retrieve email messages from a mail server over a Internet protocol suite, TCP/IP connection. IMAP is defined by . IMAP was designed with the goal of permitting complete management of an email box by multiple email clients, therefore clients generally leave messages on the server until the user explicitly deletes them. Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) is an Application programming interface, API for Microsoft Windows which allows programs to become email-aware. Mark Reed Crispin (July 19, 1956 in Camden, New Jersey – December 28, 2012 in Poulsbo, Washington) is best known as the father of the Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP), having invented it in 1985 during his time at the Stanford Knowledge Systems Laboratory. He is the author or co-author of numerous RFCs and was the principal author of UW IMAP, one of the reference implementations of the IMAP4rev1 protocol described in RFC 3501.
