Curling is a mainly residential neighbourhood of the city of Corner Brook, Newfoundland and Labrador. It is situated just west of the main part of the city. Located in the Humber Arm of the Bay of Islands, Newfoundland and Labrador, Bay of Islands, Curling was originally a fishing community. It is the oldest section of Corner Brook. Corner Brook ( 2021 population: 19,333 CA 29,762) is a city located on the west coast of the island of Newfoundland in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Corner Brook is the fifth largest settlement in Newfoundland and Labrador. Located on the Bay of Islands at the mouth of the Humber River, the city is the second-largest population centre in the province behind St. John's, and smallest of three cities behind St. John's and Mount Pearl. As such, Corner Brook functions as a service centre for western and northern Newfoundland. The Bay of Islands is an extensive inlet located on the west coast of the island of Newfoundland, in Canada. It is a sub-basin of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, consisting of many inlets such as Humber Arm and Goose Arm. The Bay of Islands is bordered on the north and south by North Arm Hills and Blow Me Down mountains, which are part of the Humber Arm Allochthon, which also include the Lewis Hills and the Tablelands. James Cook
James Cook (7 November 1728 Old Style date: 27 October – 14 February 1779) was a British explorer, navigator, cartographer, and captain in the British Royal Navy, famous for his three voyages between 1768 and 1779 in the Pacific Ocean and to New Zealand and Australia in particular. Humber Arm
The Humber Arm is the southernmost arm of the Bay of Islands on the west coast of Newfoundland. The arm has the highest concentration of fresh water of the entire bay, due to inflow of the Humber River. The Humber is one of the major rivers on the island of Newfoundland, making the Bay of Islands an important estuary. Near the mouth of the Humber River appropriately named "Humber Mouth", is the city of Corner Brook (2006 pop.: 20,083), as well as several neighbouring suburbs. The Humber River was used for many years to float logs down to the Bay of Islands where a large Bowater pulp and paper mill at Corner Brook turned them into paper products. ''The Western Star'' is a weekly newspaper published Wednesdays in Corner Brook, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, and also serving Stephenville and the Bay of Islands, Bay St. George and Humber Valley areas. The paper was founded in 1900 in Curling, as a weekly newspaper. It became a daily paper in 1954 and was the only daily newspaper in western Newfoundland. Route 450 (also known as Captain Cook's Trail) is a highway in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The highway starts at an interchange at Route 1 (Trans-Canada Highway) in Corner Brook. When approaching O'Connell Drive, motorists can turn left to continue their journey along the route. The route terminates at a cul-de-sac in Lark Harbour. Route 450 made headlines in Newfoundland in January 2018 when massive rainfall caused flooding on January 13 and created a huge crater causing a large portion in the highway to collapse, thus separating residents in Lark Harbour and York Harbour from the remainder of the island. Corner Brook Transit
Corner Brook Transit is a provider of public transportation to the residents of Corner Brook, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Municipally managed, the service is provided under contract by Murphy Brothers Bus Lines. There are two routes that run from 7am to 6pm Mon-Fri with destinations including Murphy Square and the downtown area. In response to declining ridership, a pilot project is set to be initiated to reformulated the routes. The transit agency has instituted a NextBus realtime transit location system, which will provide data to internet and cell phone users on vehicle ETAs.
