Culebra, Puerto Rico
Isla Culebra (, ''Snake Island'') is an island, town and municipality of Puerto Rico and geographically part of the Spanish Virgin Islands. It is located approximately east of the Puerto Rican mainland, west of St. Thomas and north of Vieques. Culebra is spread over 5 barrios and Culebra Pueblo (Dewey), the main town and the administrative center of the island. Residents of the island are known as c''ulebrenses''. With a population of 1,792 as of the 2020 Census, it is Puerto Rico's least populous municipality. Originally called ''Isla del Pasaje'' and ''Isla de San Ildefonso'', Culebra is also known as ''Isla Chiquita'' ("Little Island"), ''Cuna del Sol Borincano'' ("Cradle of the Puerto Rican Sun") and ''Última Virgen'' ("Last Virgin", due to its position at the end of the Virgin Islands archipelago). Culebra Cut
The Culebra Cut, formerly called Gaillard Cut, is an artificial valley that cuts through the Continental Divide in Panama. The cut forms part of the Panama Canal, linking Gatun Lake, and thereby the Atlantic Ocean, to the Gulf of Panama and hence the Pacific Ocean. It is from the Pedro Miguel lock on the Pacific side to the Chagres River arm of Lake Gatun, with a water level above sea level. Construction of the cut was one of the great engineering feats of its time; the immense effort required to complete it was justified by the great significance of the canal to shipping, and in particular the strategic interests of the United States of America. ''Culebra'' is the name for the mountain ridge it cuts through, and was also originally applied to the cut itself. From 1915 to 2000 the cut was named ''Gaillard Cut'' after US Major David du Bose Gaillard, who had led the excavation. Culebra Peak
Culebra Peak (Spanish for "snake") is the highest summit of the Culebra Range of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of the Rocky Mountains of North America. The prominent fourteener is located on private land, east-southeast ( bearing 113°) of San Luis in Costilla County, Colorado, United States. Culebra Peak is the southernmost fourteener in the range. Geography Access is limited, and a fee ($150 per person as of Summer 2020) is charged to climb the peak. Ownership of and access to the land, both for recreational and other activities, have been controversial issues for many years, involving multiple lawsuits and occasional violence. In 2017 the ranch the peak was offered for sale for $105 million, and sold later that year for an undisclosed amount. Culebra is the fourth-most topographically prominent peak in the state, due to its separation from other peaks by the relatively low La Veta Pass. Sierra De La Culebra
The Sierra de la Culebra, or Serra da Coroa (in Portuguese), is a mountain range in Castile and León, northwest Spain, and northeastern Portugal. It lies 7 km south of Puebla de Sanabria in the comarcas of Aliste, Sanabria and La Carballeda ( Zamora Province), as well as Vinhais and Bragança municipalities in the District of Bragança. Its highest point is high Peña Mira, located near Flechas, within Figueruela de Arriba municipal term; other important peaks are Miño Cuevo and La Pedrizona . The Sierra de la Culebra is a 95 km long regular mountain chain of medium height, forming a natural border with the Portuguese region of Tras os Montes on its western end. Its slopes are wooded, occasionally ravaged by forest fires. The summits of the range are often covered with snow in the winter and there are odd-looking rocky quartzite outcrops on them.
