Crickhowell High School
Crickhowell High School is an English medium co-educational secondary school situated in the town of Crickhowell in the county of Powys, Wales, within the Brecon Beacons National Park. The school was built to meet the needs of the growing community and opened as a new school in 1983. It now has about 920 pupils, but was only originally intended to hold 550. The school attempted to meet the potential overcrowding issues by expanding the main building, installing new IT devices throughout the complex, and building a larger, more modern "6th Form block" for the 180 students studying A/AS levels. Exam results In 2005 at GCSE, the percentage of pupils gaining at least five grades A*-C including Mathematics and English had risen from 59% to 79% since the last inspection, compared to a rise of three percentage points nationally. Crickhowell
Crickhowell (; cy, Crucywel , non-standard spelling ') is a town and community in southeastern Powys, Wales, near Abergavenny, and is in the historic county of Brecknockshire. Location The town lies on the River Usk, on the southern edge of the Black Mountains and in the eastern part of the Brecon Beacons National Park. Significant parts of the surrounding countryside, over , form part of the Glanusk Park estate. Etymology and language The name Crickhowell is an anglicised spelling that corresponds to the Welsh Crucywel. The name is derived from Crug Hywel, meaning 'Hywel's mound'. This is usually identified with the Iron Age hill fort on nearby Table Mountain, although this has the local name of Mynydd y Begwn. Brecon Beacons National Park
The Brecon Beacons National Park ( cy, Parc Cenedlaethol Bannau Brycheiniog) is one of three national parks in Wales, and is centred on the Brecon Beacons range of hills in southern Wales. Mark Wallace (cricketer)
Mark Alexander Wallace (born 19 November 1981) is a former Welsh cricketer; a left-handed batsman and wicket-keeper. Wallace made his second XI debut for Glamorgan at the age of just 15, and by 1998 he was in the England U-19 team that played Pakistan, as well as accompanying them to New Zealand the following winter and playing three one-day games against Australia U-19s in the summer of 1999, a year in which he won the NBC Denis Compton Award. In September 1999, he made his bow in first-class cricket, appearing in the County Championship game against Somerset at the age of 17 years and 287 days – thus making him Glamorgan's youngest ever Championship wicket-keeper. Glamorgan County Cricket Club
Glamorgan County Cricket Club ( cy, Criced Morgannwg) is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Glamorgan ( cy, Morgannwg). Founded in 1888, Glamorgan held minor status at first and was a prominent member of the early Minor Counties Championship before the First World War. In 1921, the club joined the County Championship and the team was elevated to first-class status, subsequently playing in every top-level domestic cricket competition in England and Wales.
