Cottingley, Bradford
Cottingley is a suburban village within the City of Bradford in West Yorkshire, England between Shipley and Bingley. It is known for the Cottingley Fairies, which appeared in a series of photographs taken there during the early 20th century. Etymology The village is first mentioned in the Domesday Book as ''Cotingelai'' in the wapentake of Skyrack and the lands of Erneis of Buron. The first element is the personal name ''Cotta'' (the origin of which is unknown), and the second the suffix ''-ingas'' denoting a group of associated people. Thus the ''Cottingas'' were a group descended from or otherwise associated with someone called Cotta. This group name was then compounded with the Old English word ''lēah'' ('open land in a wood'). Wilsden
Wilsden is a village and civil parish in west Bradford, in West Yorkshire, England. Wilsden is west of Bradford and is close to the Aire Valley and the nearby villages of Denholme, Cullingworth, Harden, Cottingley and Allerton. Wilsden re-acquired civil parish status in 2004. The 2001 census revealed a population of 3,697, increasing to 4,807 at the 2011 Census. History During the Roman era, the area was part of the Ancient British (Celtic) kingdom of Elmet. A connection to the original British tribes of the area may have been included in the name of the village; Wilsden is an Old English name and was originally recorded as ''Wealhas-den'', which has been interpreted as "place of the Welsh". Dixons Cottingley Academy (formerly Samuel Lister Academy, Aire Valley School, Nab Wood School and originally Nab Wood Grammar School) is a mixed secondary school located in Cottingley, West Yorkshire, England. Originally opened as Nab Wood Grammar School, later Nab Wood School, it was later a foundation school administered by Bradford City Council and the Nab Wood Community Trust. As Aire Valley School it converted to academy status in April 2012 and was renamed after Samuel Lister, 1st Baron Masham, an inventor and industrialist, notable for inventing the Lister nip comb. Beckfoot Bridge
Beckfoot Bridge (also known as the Packhorse Bridge) was historically a significant crossing point over Harden Beck in Bingley, West Yorkshire, England. The cost of repair and maintenance of bridges was meted out by either the county, wapentake, parish or township, dependent on the bridge's importance. Beckfoot Bridge was the responsibility of Bingley Township as Ireland and Cottingley bridges were built rebuilt in stone and afforded better links to the town. It was constructed alongside the historical ford across the beck in 1723, replacing a previous wooden bridge. Two contractors were paid £10 to build the bridge and to maintain it and keep it in good order for seven years. It is wide enough for pedestrians or single file horses.
