''Cooloola'' is a genus of ensiferan orthopterans known as Cooloola monsters. It is the only genus in the subfamily Cooloolinae and family Cooloolidae of the superfamily Stenopelmatoidea. Four species are known from this family, all endemic to Queensland, Australia. The name originated from the discovery of the best-known member of the family, the Cooloola monster (''Cooloola propator''), in the Cooloola National Park. Little is known about their life histories as they lead an almost entirely subterranean existence, but they are believed to prey on other soil-dwelling invertebrates. Cooloola monsters are unusual in comparison with other members of the primitive superfamily Stenopelmatoidea in that the cooloolids' antennae are considerably shorter than their body lengths. The Cooloola monster (''Cooloola propator'') is a large burrowing orthopteran of the family Cooloolidae, a family erected to accommodate it because it is so dissimilar to other ensiferans. It was discovered in 1980 in the Great Sandy National Park in Queensland, Australia, by David C. Rentz. Further members of the genus '' Cooloola'' were later discovered at other locations in Queensland. Description The Cooloola monster is a robust subterranean insect, characterised by very short antennae with ten bead-like segments. This contrasts with other members of the suborder Ensifera which have thirty or more segments. The sexes are different, the male being brownish and well-sclerotized (armoured), while the female has a relatively soft exoskeleton and is usually whitish in colour, as are the juveniles. Cooloola Sedge Frog
The Cooloola sedge frog or Cooloola tree frog (''Litoria cooloolensis'') is a species of frog in the subfamily Pelodryadinae. It is endemic to Australia and only known from Fraser and North Stradbroke Islands, off south-eastern Queensland. Habitat It inhabits sandy coastal and island freshwater lakes and wallum creeks, with a preference for dense reed beds. It is threatened by water extraction and pollution and by tramping of the reef beds. It occurs in the Great Sandy National Park. Description This amphibian's back is yellowish green, speckled with dark spots, and the hidden surfaces of its thighs are orange with a purple-brown stripe. The belly is grainy and white in color. ''L. cooloolensis'', like other members of the genus Litoria, has horizontal irises. Cooloola Great Walk
The Cooloola Great Walk is a coastal bushwalking route in the Great Sandy National Park of South East Queensland, Australia. Opened in 2010, it runs from Noosa North Shore through Cooloola to Rainbow Beach, and is planned as a five-day trek. The hiking trail was officially opened by Climate Change and Sustainability Minister Kate Jones in March 2010. Path The walk passes through rainforest, tall eucalypt forest, dry coastal woodland and heath plains. It is considered an easy walk with no long or steep climbs. The Cooloola Great Walk was extended so walkers could pass by the Double Island Point Lighthouse. Cooloola is a coastal locality in the Gympie Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , Cooloola had a population of 3 people. Geography Cooloola is a coastal locality, being bounded by Wide Bay in the Coral Sea to the east including the major headland, Double Island Point. From Double Island Point, Rainbow Beach extends to the west and then to the north, while Teewah Beach stretches for many kilometres to the south. Off the coast of Double Island Point is Wolf Rock which is Queensland's most important habitat area for the critically endangered grey nurse shark. It is a mating area and a high number of females and pregnant females have been seen there. The locality's north-west boundary is Tin Can Inlet off Tin Can Bay. The locality is entirely within the Great Sandy National Park and is undeveloped apart from some basic bushwalking and camping infrastructure. The Shire of Cooloola was a local government area located about north of Brisbane – the state capital of Queensland, Australia. The shire covered an area of , and was the product of a merger in 1993 between the City of Gympie and the Shire of Widgee, which had both existed since 1879–1880. It merged with several other LGAs to form the Gympie Region on 15 March 2008. History The Cooloola area was originally settled for grazing purposes. The discovery of gold in 1867 lead to a gold rush and the development of the Mary River valley for closer agricultural pursuits. The Widgee Division was incorporated on 11 November 1879 under the ''Divisional Boards Act 1879''. On 3 July 1886, its western part separately incorporated as the Kilkivan Division.
