Auxerre
Auxerre ( , ) is the capital of the Yonne department and the fourth-largest city in Burgundy. Auxerre's population today is about 35,000; the urban area (''aire d'attraction'') comprises roughly 113,000 inhabitants. Residents of Auxerre are referred to as ''Auxerrois''. Auxerre is a commercial and industrial centre, with industries including food production, woodworking and batteries. It is also noted for its production of Burgundy wine, including Chablis. In 1995 Auxerre was named "Town of Art and History". Geography Auxerre lies on the river Yonne and the Canal du Nivernais, about 150 km southeast of Paris and 120 km northwest of Dijon. Coulanges-la-Vineuse () is a commune in the Yonne department in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté in north-central France. Best known for its wines, Coulanges produces extremely pleasing Red and Rosé wines, similar in style to those of nearby Irancy, although lacking something of the depth and structure. Most of the vines are Pinot Noir, although a few Gamay and Cesar vines remain. Irancy
Irancy () is a commune in the Yonne department in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté in north-central France. It is located southwest of Chablis in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. History The town of Irancy was developed beginning in the year 900AD when the Abbot Richard, Duke of Burgundy, expanded his abbey to include the region of Irancy. This action was granted by the charter of King Charles on 22 April of the same year. Huguenots The religious tension of France during the Middle Ages reached even to the small town of Irancy. The city had been built around the Catholic convent of Saint Germain and persecutions for Protestants led to a siege in 1568. On 7 February, a group of French Protestants called Huguenots laid siege to the town of Irancy, an incident now called the Siege of Cravant.
