City of Colorado Springs Municipal Airport , known as Colorado Springs Airport, is a city-owned public civil-military airport southeast of downtown Colorado Springs, in El Paso County, Colorado, United States., effective December 30, 2021. It is the second busiest commercial service airport in the state after Denver International Airport. Peterson Space Force Base, which is located on the north side of runway 13/31, is a tenant of the airport. History In 1927 the airport opened on east of the city, with two gravel runways. For the first ten years several small airlines operated a mail route from Cheyenne, Wyoming to Pueblo, Colorado with stops at Denver and Colorado Springs. These airlines only occasionally carried passengers. Peterson Air and Space Museum is an aviation museum located at Peterson Space Force Base, Colorado Springs, Colorado focused on the history the of Air Defense Command, Aerospace Defense Command and Air Force Space Command. History The museum grew from the North American Aerospace Defense Command Visitor Center established by Col. Donald Parson in 1975. Exhibits The main entrance of the museum is through the original terminal building for the Colorado Springs Airport, built in 1941 for the Colorado Springs Municipal Airport. This building houses a small number of exhibits mainly focusing on the base's World War II history as a training ground for the 14th Photographic Reconnaissance Squadron, including a tribute to 1st Lt. State Highway 21 (SH 21), also known as Powers Boulevard, is an expressway in El Paso County, in eastern Colorado Springs. SH 21 currently extends from SH 16 (Mesa Ridge Parkway) in Fountain at its southern end to Interquest Parkway/ SH 83 in the north side of Colorado Springs. Extensions to I-25 near North Gate Boulevard are in progress, and extensions south to I-25 near Pikes Peak International Raceway are proposed, and the road is planned to be converted to a freeway in the long-term future.
