Cohn-Brandt-Cohn (CBC) Film Sales Corporation (also known as CBC Film Sales or simply CBC) was an American film studio that was founded on June 19, 1918 by brothers Harry and Jack Cohn and their friend and co-worker at Independent Moving Pictures, Joe Brandt with $250 of capital ($5,063 in late-2022 dollars). The headquarters were at 1600 Broadway in New York. Brandt was the president of CBC Film Sales, handling sales, marketing and distribution from New York along with Jack Cohn, while Harry Cohn ran production in Hollywood. CBC Film's early productions were low-budget short subjects: '' Screen Snapshots'' (started in 1920), the "Hall Room Boys" (the vaudeville duo of Edward Flanagan and Neely Edwards), and the Chaplin imitator Billy West. Poverty Row
Poverty Row is a slang term used to refer to Hollywood films produced from the 1920s to the 1950s by small (and mostly short-lived) B movie studios. Although many of them were based on (or near) today's Gower Street in Hollywood, the term did not necessarily refer to any specific physical location, but was rather a figurative catch-all for low-budget films produced by these lower-tier studios. Many of the films of Poverty Row were Westerns, including series such as ''Billy the Kid'', starring Buster Crabbe, from Producers Releasing Corporation (PRC), comedy/adventure series such as those featuring the Bowery Boys (Monogram Pictures) and detectives such as The Shadow. ''The Marriage Market'' is a 1923 American silent romantic comedy film directed by Edward LeSaint and starring Pauline Garon, Jack Mulhall, and Alice Lake. The film was released by the CBC Film Sales Corporation, which would later become Columbia Pictures. Plot As described in a film magazine review, mischievous pranks lead to the expulsion of Theodora Bland from a young woman's fashionable academy. She aids Dora Smith, who is escaping from a reform school, and later impersonates her in the home of novelist Roland Carruthers. The latter hides her from the Sheriff. It was written by Mack and her husband Louis Lewyn, and stars Mack and Creighton Hale. A film exchange was a business in film distribution that rented out movies to theaters. They opened up all over the U.S. to handle film reels during the silent film era. Film exchanges were often a separate business from production. Buildings were constructed for film exchange operations and "film rows" of different company's exchanges developed in some cities. Designs for film exchanges included buildings with vented vaults. Fire prevention was a concern. William Fox, who had nickelodeon (movie theater) businesses, established a film exchange in Brooklyn.
