The City of Busselton is a Local government areas of Western Australia, local government area in the South West (Western Australia), South West region of Western Australia, approximately south of Perth, the state capital. The city covers an area of and had a population of 40,640 as at the 2021 Australia Census, 2021 Census. It contains two large towns, Busselton, Western Australia, Busselton and Dunsborough, Western Australia, Dunsborough, and a number of smaller towns. The city office is located on Southern Drive, Busselton. History The City of Busselton was established as the Busselton Road District on 11 May 1951 with the amalgamation of the Municipality of Busselton, governing the area of Busselton bounded by West Street and Ford Road, and the Sussex Road District, governing the remaining area. Abbey, Western Australia
Abbey is a suburb of the Western Australian city of Busselton. At the 2021 census, it had a population of 1,321. This suburb, which was the western part of an area known as Abbeyville, was part of Broadwater when it was gazetted in 1897. In 1955 the area of the Abbey locality was approved as a suburb, officially known as Abbeyville but usually referred to as Abbey; in 1987 it was approved as a bounded locality with the name of "Abbeys", which was changed to "Abbey" in 1993. Yalyalup, Western Australia
Yalyalup is a suburb of the Western Australian city of Busselton. At the 2021 census, it had a population of 2,950. The word "Yalyalup" means "place of many holes" in the local Noongar dialect, being a reduplication of "yal", the Wardandi word for "large hole", plus the -up suffix, meaning "place of". After European settlement the area began to be used for timber-milling; the local mill was reworked using state-of-the-art technology in 1963 and finally closed in 1979. Wonnerup, Western Australia
The townsite of Wonnerup is located south of Perth and east of Busselton. It was gazetted a townsite in 1856, deriving its name from the nearby Wonnerup Inlet. The name is Aboriginal, and has been shown on maps of the region since 1839. The meaning of the name is "place of the woman's digging or fighting stick"; the Noongar word for fighting stick is ''wonna'', while the suffix '' -up'' denotes ''place of''. The wonna was made from the peppermint tree, ''Agonis flexuosa'', a coastal native found only in the south-west, and was a common trade item of the Noongar people. The Wonnerup massacre of Wardandi Noongar people by European settlers occurred in the vicinity of the area in 1841. The Ballaarat Tramline, Western Australia's first railway and railway bridge, was constructed in 1871 in the locality of Lockville, within Wonnerup. Vasse is a suburb of the city of Busselton in the South West region of Western Australia, west of Busselton and southwest of Perth. Its local government area is the City of Busselton. At the 2016 census, Vasse had a population of 2,479. The area was originally inhabited by the Wardandi people. Hurford and Penney seem to have had a bay whaling operation in Geographe Bay in 1846. Siesta Park is a locality of the City of Busselton in the South West region of Western Australia. Siesta Park is located on a thin strip of land between Caves Road, which forms its southern border, and Geographe Bay to the north. Geographe, Western Australia
Geographe is a suburb of the Western Australian city of Busselton. At the 2021 census, it had a population of 3,622. ''Sandylands'', one of the first houses built in Busselton, was constructed in the area beginning in 1840 by Charles Bussell, the younger brother of John Bussell. Geographe was developed as an urban area in the mid-1990s, with the Port Geographe Marina, which was opened in 1997, being constructed as part of the development. The suburb was established in 1998, being made up of the old East Busselton locality and parts of Wonnerup.
