Cinemex is a Mexican chain of cinemas. It operates multiplexes in cities such as Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey, Toluca, Cd. Juarez, Leon, Tijuana, Mexicali, Puebla and other Mexican cities. In 2015, Cinemex began to expand into the United States under the banner CMX. It initially focused on cinemas with premium amenities; in 2017, this division expanded via its acquisition of Cobb Theatres, making it the eighth-largest U.S. cinema chain. MMCinemas was a cineplex company based in Monterrey, Mexico. It operated 87 cineplexes, primarily in northern Mexico, with more than 900 screens at the time of its merger with Cinemex in 2008. History MMCinemas was established in 1981 by Grupo Multimedios, a Monterrey-based broadcasting company, when the company opened its first movie theater in that city. By 1994, the chain owned 14 multiplexes with a total of 47 screens in northern Mexico. Cobb Theatres was an American cinema chain based in Birmingham, Alabama. The company was established in 1921, in Fayette, Alabama, expanding through the South starting in the late 1940s, and buying out General Cinema's West Central Florida theatres and Wometco Theatres in the 1990s before being bought by Regal Cinemas in 1997 and revived in 2001.
