Christian Cornelius Paus
Christian Cornelius Paus (18 October 1800 – 8 April 1879) was a Norwegian lawyer, civil servant and politician. He was Governor of Bratsberg (now Telemark) and a Member of the Norwegian Parliament. Background He was born at Skien in Telemark, Norway. He belonged to both the Norwegian patrician Paus and Plesner families. He was the son of ship-owner Ole Paus and Johanne Plesner (in her first marriage married Ibsen), and was the uncle of playwright Henrik Ibsen. He was both the half-brother of Henrik Ibsen's father, Knud Ibsen, and the first cousin of Henrik Ibsen's mother, Marichen Altenburg. Career Career in the civil service Paus obtained the cand. jur. degree in 1825. He was employed in the Norwegian central government at the Ministry of the Navy from 1822 to 1836, as a senior adviser from 1826. Skien
Skien () is a city and municipality in Vestfold og Telemark county in Norway. In modern times it is regarded as part of the traditional region of Grenland, although historically it belonged to Grenmar/Skiensfjorden, while Grenland referred the Norsjø area and Bø. The administrative centre of the municipality is the city of Skien. Skien is also the capital of Vestfold og Telemark county. Nils Christian Irgens (10 October 1811 – 25 April 1878) was a Norwegian military officer and politician. He was born in Sogndal as the son of Lars Johannes Irgens, founding father of the Norwegian Constitution. Nils Christian Irgens became a military officer in 1830, and advanced in the ranks, becoming colonel in 1861. In 1863 he became major general. Lars Johannes Irgens (9 October 1775 – 22 April 1830) was a Norwegian jurist and public official. He served as a representative at the Norwegian Constitutional Assembly. Lars Johannes Irgens was born in Hof in Solør, Hedmark, Norway. He was the son of the parish priest of Hof. He was married to Christiane Louise Smith (1778-1858) with whom he had eight children including Norwegian government minister Nils Christian Irgens. He served as a lieutenant in Oppland Dragon Corps (''Oplandske Dragonregiment''). He graduated as cand.jur. in 1802, and was appointed district stipendiary magistrate (''sorenskriver'') at Sogn in Sogn og Fjordane the same year. He held this office until his death . Gjerpen
Gjerpen is a former township which is now part of the municipality of Skien, in Telemark county, Norway. Location The parish of Gjerpen was established as a municipality January 1, 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). According to the 1835 census the municipality had a population of 4,381. Gjerpen was located east of the city of Skien. It encompassed districts such as Borgestad, Bøle, Gulset and Luksefjell. On 1 July 1916 an area with roughly 1,332 inhabitants was moved to Skien, and on 1 July 1920 an area with 437 inhabitants was moved to Porsgrunn. On 1 January 1964 the rest of Gjerpen was incorporated into Skien, along with Solum and the district Valebø. Prior to the merger Gjerpen had a population of 15,300. The current district of Gjerpen constitute only a small part of the former Gjerpen municipality.
