David Cholmondeley, 7th Marquess Of Cholmondeley
David George Philip Cholmondeley, 7th Marquess of Cholmondeley, (; born 27 June 1960), styled Viscount Malpas from birth until 1968, and subsequently Earl of Rocksavage until 1990, is a British peer and filmmaker who acted as Lord Great Chamberlain of the United Kingdom from 1990 to 2022. Early life and education Lord Cholmondeley is a descendant of Sir Robert Walpole (1676–1745), the first Prime Minister of Great Britain. He is the son of Hugh Cholmondeley, 6th Marquess of Cholmondeley, and Lavinia, Marchioness of Cholmondeley (née Leslie). He is also a descendant of both the Rothschild family and the Sassoon family through his paternal grandmother, Sybil Sassoon. He has three older sisters: the Ladies Rose, Margot (married to Tony Huston), and Caroline (married to Baron Rodolphe d'Erlanger). Hugh Cholmondeley (soldier)
Sir Hugh Cholmondeley (1513 – 6 January 1596) was an English soldier. Life Cholmondeley was the second son of Richard Cholmondeley (not to be confused with a cousin, Richard Cholmondeley) and Elizabeth Brereton. The Cholmondeley family had held the lordship of Cholmondeley in Cheshire since the time of the Norman conquest. He succeeded his elder brother who died in 1539. He fought against the Scots in 1542 and for this he was knighted by King Henry VIII. In 1557, he raised one hundred men at his own expense and joined the Earl of Derby in his expedition against an invading Scottish army. Apart from his military career he was also High Sheriff (six times between 1547 and 1588), Deputy Lieutenant of Cheshire (1569, 1585, 1587), Custos Rotulorum of Cheshire (1579 to his death) and High Sheriff of Flintshire for 1582–83. William Henry Hugh Cholmondeley, 3rd Marquess of Cholmondeley (; 31 March 1800 – 16 December 1884), styled Lord Henry Cholmondeley from 1815 until 1870, was a British peer and Conservative Member of Parliament. Robert Cholmondeley, 1st Viscount Cholmondeley
Robert Cholmondeley, 1st Viscount Cholmondeley (died 22 May 1681) was an English peer. Lord Cholmondeley was the son of Hugh Cholmondeley and Mary Bodvile. Sir Hugh Cholmondeley was his grandfather and Robert Cholmondeley, 1st Earl of Leinster, his uncle. He succeeded to the estates of his uncle Lord Leinster in 1659 and two years later he was raised to the Peerage of Ireland as Viscount Cholmondeley, of Kells in the County of Meath. Cholmondeley married Elizabeth Cradock, daughter of George Cradock of Caverswall Castle. He died in May 1681, and was succeeded in the viscountcy by his eldest son Hugh, who was created Earl of Cholmondeley in 1706. His second son George became a prominent soldier. Robert Cholmondeley, 1st Earl of Leinster (26 June 1584 – 8 October 1659), was an English Royalist and supporter of Charles I during the English Civil War. Life Cholmondeley was born in Crouchend, Highgate, Middlesex, on 26 June 1584, the son of Sir Hugh Cholmondeley and Mary Holford (daughter of Christopher Holford of Holford). He was created a Baronet on 29 June 1611. He was High Sheriff of Cheshire in 1620 and served as MP for Cheshire in 1625. He was created Viscount Cholmondeley of Kells (Ireland) in 1628 and Baron Cholmondeley of Wich Malbank (i.e. Nantwich in Cheshire) on 1 September 1645. On 5 March 1646, he was created Earl of Leinster in Ireland. He died 2 October 1659, and was buried in the chancel of Malpas church. Richard Cholmondeley
Sir Richard Cholmondeley (or Cholmeley) (c. 1460–1521) was an English farmer and soldier, who served as Lieutenant of the Tower of London from 1513 to 1520 during the reign of Henry VIII. He is remembered because of his tomb at the Tower of London and because he is fictionalized as a character in Gilbert and Sullivan's darkly comic opera, ''The Yeomen of the Guard''. Cholmeley's name has frequently been misspelled "Cholmondeley" because of its misspelling in the plaque on his tomb, which led to the misspelling of the character's name in the opera; other branches of Cholmeley's family use the longer spelling. Knighted in 1497 for valour in battle against the Scots, Cholmeley continued to serve as a soldier until 1513, becoming entrusted with many positions of responsibility for security of castles and fortifications in England. Lionel Berners Cholmondeley (11 December 1858 – 21 January 1945) was an ordained Anglican priest, educator, historian and Rector of St. Barnabas' Church at Ushigome in Shinjuku, Tokyo. For thirty years he served as a minister in the Anglican Church in Japan, and variously as a lecturer at Waseda University and honorary chaplain to the British Embassy in Tokyo. As a historian he published the first English-language history of the Bonin Islands, now known as the Ogasawara Islands. James Cholmondeley
James Cholmondeley (18 April 1708 – 13 October 1775) was a British Army officer and Member of Parliament between 1731 and 1747. He fought at Fontenoy and during the 1745 Rising commanded a brigade at the Battle of Falkirk, where he suffered severe exposure. He retired from politics in 1747 and ceased his active military service in 1750, although promoted General in 1770. His marriage ended in divorce in 1737 and he had no children; he died in 1775 and was buried in Westminster Abbey.
