Childersburg
Childersburg is a city in Talladega County in the U.S. state of Alabama. It was incorporated in 1889. At the 2020 census, the population was 4,754. It has a history dating back before 1540, when it was noted as a village of the Coosa Nation visited by the Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto. It is said a member of De Soto’s crew fell ill and was left to settle in the area of present day Childersburg where the Coosa people cared for the ill explorer. The Alabama Army Ammunition Plant, important during World War II, was located north of Childersburg. Geography Childersburg is located at (33.275187, −86.353166). State Route 76 (SR 76) is a state highway in Shelby and Talladega counties in the U.S. state of Alabama. The western terminus of the highway is at an intersection with SR 25 north of Wilsonville, and the eastern terminus of the highway is at an intersection with SR 21 at Winterboro. Alabama Army Ammunition Plant
The Alabama Army Ammunition Plant (ALAAP), was a United States munitions plant built and operated during World War II. The facility is located four miles (6 km) north of Childersburg, Alabama in Talladega County, Alabama. History The ALAAP was built in 1941 as a production facility for nitrocellulose (NC), trinitrotoluene (TNT), dinitrotoluene (DNT), tetryl, and single-base smokeless powder. The facility, operated by DuPont, had a peak production rate of nearly 40 million pounds (18 million kg) of munitions per month. It also produced heavy water for the Manhattan Project. Sylacauga, Alabama
Sylacauga is a city in Talladega County, Alabama, United States. At the 2020 census, the population was 12,578. Sylacauga is known for its fine white marble bedrock. This was discovered shortly after settlers moved into the area and has been quarried ever since. The marble industry was the first recorded industry in the Sylacauga area. Sylacauga is the site of the first documented case of an object from outer space hitting a person. On November 30, 1954, a piece of what became known as the Hodges Fragment from the Sylacauga Meteorite crashed through the roof of an Oak Grove house, bounced off a radio, and badly bruised Ann Hodges, who was taking an afternoon nap. US Route 280
U.S. Route 280 (US 280) is a spur of U.S. Highway 80. It currently runs for 392 miles (631 km) from Blichton, Georgia at US 80 to Birmingham, Alabama at I-20/I-59. Harpersville is a town in Shelby County, Alabama, United States. According to the 1950 U.S. Census, it formally incorporated in 1943. At the 2020 census the population was 1,614, compared to 1,637 in 2010 and 1,620 in 2000. It is located southeast of the Birmingham metro area. Winterboro, Alabama
Winterboro, also spelled Winterborough, is an unincorporated community in Talladega County, Alabama, United States. History The state of Alabama incorporated the Central Plank Road on January 30, 1850. It was planned to run from Montgomery to Guntersville via Talladega. Joseph Winter planned the road, but the people of Talladega did not give him their expected financial support. As a consequence, Winter ended the plank road at Winterboro and named the settlement for himself. A post office called Winterboro was established in 1853 and remained in operation until 1875. During the Great Depression, the Civilian Conservation Corps cleared brush from pastures around Winterboro. Today, Winterboro is at the junction of Alabama State Route 21 and Alabama State Route 76.
