Chemin De Fer De La Rivière Romaine
The Chemin de fer de la Rivière Romaine (in English, the Romaine River Railway) is a Canadian short line iron ore mining railway operating in eastern Quebec. Description The railway runs for from the port of Havre-Saint-Pierre on the north shore of the Saint Lawrence River inland to a massive ilmenite (titanium iron) deposit at Lac-Allard. At Havre-Saint-Pierre, the mineral is loaded aboard bulk carriers and shipped upriver to the port of Sorel-Tracy. COGEMA operates a train ferry that connect with the line. QIT also operates passenger trains for workers, as the mine is not accessible by road. Havre-Saint-Pierre is a town on Pointe-aux-Esquimaux, which is on the Quebec north shore (Côte-Nord) of the Saint Lawrence River in Canada. Located along Route 138 some east of Sept-Îles, it is the largest town and seat of the Minganie RCM, and home to many government, municipal, and regional services. Historically, the town's first inhabitants came from the Magdalen Islands in the nineteenth century. As a result, the people of the town speak a dialect much more closely related to Acadian French than to Quebec French. Other important geological features near the town include the Romaine River to the north and west, les Chutes Manitou, on the Manitou River to the west, l'Ile du Havre, less than a kilometre offshore from the town, and Anticosti Island, which on clear days can be seen to the south of the town. Compagnie de gestion de Matane Inc. (COGEMA) is a subsidiary of Canadian National Railway (CN) operating a dedicated railcar ferry service in Quebec between Matane and Baie-Comeau; additionally it provides occasional Train ferry, railcar ferry service to isolated rail networks at the ports of Port Cartier, Quebec, Port Cartier, Sept-Îles, Quebec, Sept-Îles and Havre-Saint-Pierre, Quebec, Havre-Saint-Pierre. It also operates industrial switching to rail customers in Baie-Comeau. COGEMA began operations in 1975 and operates the company's only railcar ferry, the MV ''Georges Alexandre Lebel''. COGEMA was sold by CN to Société des chemins de fer du Québec, Quebec Railway Corporation on 14 February 1999 when QRC also purchased the Matane and Mont Joli Subdivisions.
