Cheat Lake
Cheat Lake is a reservoir on the Cheat River in Monongalia County, West Virginia, United States. It was originally named Lake Lynn, but the Board on Geographic Names officially decided upon Cheat Lake as the reservoir's name in 1976. The surface area of Cheat Lake is about , the volume is approximately , and it is located immediately downstream of the Cheat Canyon. Cheat Lake has 3 marinas located towards the river end of the reservoir. They are Edgewater Marina, Cheat Lake Marina, and Sunset Beach Marina. Cheat Lake Dam is located directly south of the Mason–Dixon line border with Pennsylvania. The dam is run by eleven employees and has a generating capacity of . Cheat Lake Dam's total length across the Cheat River is approximately . The first water flowed over the dam on December 23, 1925 and it began its operation on May 31, 1926. Monongalia County, West Virginia
Monongalia County, known locally as Mon County, is located in the U.S. state of West Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 105,822, making it West Virginia's third-most populous county. Its county seat is at Morgantown. The county was founded in 1776. Monongalia County is included in the Morgantown, WV Metropolitan Statistical Area, and is the largest county in North-Central West Virginia. It is part of the Pittsburgh media market. Coopers Rock State Forest
Coopers Rock State Forest is a state forest in Monongalia and Preston counties in the U.S. state of West Virginia. Its southern edge abuts Cheat Lake and the canyon section of Cheat River, a popular whitewater rafting river in the eastern United States. History Coopers Rock State Forest gets its name from a legend about a fugitive who hid from the law near what is now the overlook. A cooper by trade, he resumed making barrels at his new mountain hideout, selling them to people in nearby communities. He lived and worked in the forest for many years. Much of Coopers Rock was originally developed by projects of the Civilian Conservation Corps from 1936-1942. Mont Chateau State Park
Mont Chateau State Park was formerly a state park located beside Cheat Lake in Monongalia County, West Virginia, USA. History Commissioning and operations Some of land for park were originally purchased in June 1955. A new lodge was subsequently constructed and opened, along with the beach, on June 7, 1958. After unsuccessfully attempting different ways of managing and operating the park, it was closed in 1977. Current status While the park itself was closed, the state has retained a portion of the site. The former lodge has housed the West Virginia Geological and Economic Survey, including a small geology museum, since the 1970s. The land also provides access from the Coopers Rock State Forest trail system to Cheat Lake. The other were first leased and then sold to Fred St. Clair in 1985 for recreational use.
