Cha Katō
(born 1 March 1943, Setagaya, Tokyo), also known as Kato-chan, is a male Japanese comedian and actor. His real name is . Cha is one of the members of The Drifters and plays drums. His work with Ken Shimura, another Drifter, is well known in Japan. Setagaya
is a special ward in Tokyo, Japan. It is also the name of a neighborhood and administrative district within the ward. The ward calls itself Setagaya City in English. Fun TV With Kato-chan And Ken-chan
was a Japanese television variety show aired on Tokyo Broadcasting System around the mid-1980s. Starring Ken Shimura and Cha Kato, former members of the group The Drifters from ''Hachiji Dayo! Zen'in Shugo'', the irreverent and satirical program would poke fun at contemporary society in Japan, and would feature comedy vignettes similar to those found on ''The Benny Hill Show'' or ''The Carol Burnett Show''. Leslie Nielsen once made a special appearance on the show as well. The duo also had a PC Engine video game, '' Kato-chan and Ken-chan'', based on their antics, filled with toilet humor, and featuring them as the game's playable characters. It was translated and censored for a Western TurboGrafx-16 release as ''J.J. & Jeff'' due to copyright issues and the toilet humor. Ken Shimura
(born , 20 February 1950 – 29 March 2020) was a Japanese comedian. He co-starred with Masashi Tashiro, Nobuyoshi Kuwano in the Japanese variety show '. Throughout his comedy career, Shimura was known for his "Bakatono-sama" character, which was unusual among Japanese comedians, in that he could satirize the deeds of powerful figures (a company president, a politician, a family head, a school principal, the head of a Japanese yakuza gang) under the garb of a foolish king who lived in the country a long time ago. Another popular routine of Shimura in the same show was "Henna Oji-san" eird/dirty old manwho entertained himself in the company of nubile girls. After being caught for his pranks, the character regularly ended the routine with a song 'Sou desu. Watashi ga Henna Oji-san desu'. ("That is correct. I am Henna Oji-san.") The Drifters (Japanese Band)
are a Japanese rock and roll band and comedy group. The band formed as "Sons of Drifters" around 1956 from two bands "Mountain Boys" and "Tokyo Western Boys". However, members in the group changed back and forth occasionally. Chosuke Ikariya became the group's leader in 1964. Although the band became famous as a comedy group under Ikariya, they took part in the Kōhaku Uta Gassen as a musical band for the first time in 2001. Ikariya died of lymph node cancer in 2004 at the age of 72. The group is also known for its 40-second performance as an opening act for The Beatles' first ever concert in Japan. Comedian
A comedian or comic is a person who seeks to entertain an audience by making them laugh. This might be through jokes or amusing situations, or acting foolish (as in slapstick), or employing prop comedy. A comedian who addresses an audience directly is called a stand-up comedian. A popular saying often attributed to Ed Wynn attempts to differentiate the two terms: "A comic says funny things; a comedian says things funny." This draws a distinction between how much of the comedy can be attributed to verbal content and how much to acting and persona.
