Carlo Buongiorno
Carlo Buongiorno (12 March 1930 – 26 November 2011), was an Italian aerospace engineer, first Director of the Italian Space Agency and professor at the Sapienza University, in Rome. He was a pivotal figure in the Italian space program. Life Buongiorno was a student and collaborator of professor Luigi Broglio: he graduated in electronic and aerospace engineering at Sapienza University of Rome. In 1954, he became a researcher at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering, at the time led by Antonio Ferri, where, he studied on both supersonic and hypersonic spaceflight. After returning to Italy in 1957, he taught aerospace propulsion at the School of Aerospace Engineering of Sapienza University, in the department of mechanics and dipartimento di meccanica e astronautics. Salto Di Quirra
Salto di Quirra is a restricted weapons testing range and rocket launching site near Perdasdefogu on Sardinia. It is the largest military range in Italy, composed of 12000 hectares of land owned by the Italian Ministry of Defence and one of the largest in operation within the European Union. Birth defects and cancer in the area have been blamed on weaponry used at the site. Sardinia hosts about 60% of Italian military ranges and together with Friuli-Venezia Giulia is one of the most militarized regions of Italy. Salto di Quirra primarily launches military rockets, but civilian rockets, such as the Skylark, have occasionally been launched for the study of the upper atmosphere. Broglio Space Center
The Luigi Broglio Space Center (BSC) is an Italian-owned spaceport near Malindi, Kenya, named after its founder and Italian space pioneer Luigi Broglio. Developed in the 1960s through a partnership between the Sapienza University of Rome's Aerospace Research Centre and NASA, the BSC served as a spaceport for the launch of both Italian and international satellites (1967–1988). The center comprises a main offshore launch site, known as the San Marco platform, as well as two secondary control platforms and a communications ground station on the mainland. San Marco 1, also known as San Marco A, was the first Italian satellite. A satellite or artificial satellite is an object intentionally placed into orbit in outer space. Except for passive satellites, most satellites have an electricity generation system for equipment on board, such as solar panels or radioisotope thermoelectric generators (RTGs).
