Calcutta, Ohio
Calcutta is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in southeastern Columbiana County, Ohio, United States. The population was 3,941 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Salem micropolitan area and the greater Youngstown–Warren area. Historically a rural town, Calcutta has experienced significant growth since the 1970s as businesses from other areas of East Liverpool moved into larger shopping centers clustered around Ohio State Route 170. History Calcutta was laid out in 1810 as "West Union". It had also been called "Foulkstown", for William Foulks, who built the first brick house there, as well as " Nineveh", after the Biblical city of the same name. Finally, it was renamed "Calcutta", after the Indian city of Kolkata (formerly anglicised as Calcutta). A post office called Calcutta was established in 1838, and remained in operation until 1913. Ohio State Route 11
State Route 11 (SR 11) is a north–south freeway in the northeastern portion of the U.S. state of Ohio. Its southern terminus is at U.S. Route 30 (US 30) in East Liverpool at the West Virginia state line on the Jennings Randolph Bridge over the Ohio River; its northern terminus is at SR 531 in Ashtabula. The route is concurrent with US 30 through East Liverpool and with Interstate 80 (I-80) near Youngstown. The first section of the route to be completed, from Canfield to Austintown, opened in 1969. The entire current route was complete in 1972, and upgraded to a divided highway by 1980. Ohio's 11th congressional district encompasses portions of Cuyahoga County in the Northeast part of the state—including most of the majority-black precincts in Cleveland. It has been represented by Shontel Brown since 2021. Ohio has had at least 11 congressional districts since the 1820 census. U.S. Route 30 or U.S. Highway 30 (US 30) is an east–west main route in the system of the United States Numbered Highways, with the highway traveling across the northern tier of the country. East Liverpool is a city in southeastern Columbiana County, Ohio, United States. The population was 9,958 at the 2020 census. It lies along the Ohio River within the Upper Ohio Valley and borders Pennsylvania to the east and West Virginia to the south.
