Cain-Sloan Co. Inc. was a department store chain based in Nashville, Tennessee, United States. It was founded in 1903, merged with Allied Stores in 1955, and with Dillard's in 1987. It was a target of the 1960 Nashville sit-ins. History The store was co-founded by Paul Lowe Sloan, Pat Cain and John E. Cain in Nashville in 1903. The company merged with Allied Stores Corp. of New York in 1955 and remained under its umbrella before being sold to, and renamed, Dillard's in 1987-1988. The chain had four locations: Downtown Nashville, Hickory Hollow Mall, Rivergate Mall, and The Mall at Green Hills. Civil Rights Movement Cain-Sloan was a target of one of the earliest sit-in protests by young African-Americans in Nashville during the Civil Rights Movement. John Sloan (businessman)
John Sloan (June 28, 1904 – March 15, 1988) was an American businessman. He served as the president of Cain-Sloan, a department store in Nashville, Tennessee, from 1937 to 1970, including during the 1960 Nashville sit-ins. Early life Sloan was born on June 28, 1904. His father, Paul Sloan, was a co-founder of Cain-Sloan, a department store. His paternal great-grandfather, George Sloan, was a friend of President James K. Polk. Sloan graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1925. Career Sloan began his career as a salesman at Cain-Sloan. Rivergate Mall is a super-regional Shopping mall, shopping mall located in Goodlettsville, Tennessee, United States, just outside of Nashville, Tennessee, Nashville, the List of capitals in the United States, state capital of Tennessee. Global Mall At The Crossings
Global Mall at the Crossings (formerly Hickory Hollow Mall) was a 1.1 million-square-foot (102,193-square-meter) regional indoor shopping mall in the Nashville neighborhood of Antioch, Tennessee, located just east of I-24 at exit 59 along Bell Road (Route 254). The shopping center was inaugurated on August 11, 1978, and flourished for three decades, containing 249 stores during its heyday as the largest and highest-grossing mall in Tennessee. Many factors led to its decline during the late 2000s, plummeting to a mere 12 retailers by the year 2012, earning its status as a dead mall. Between 2012 and 2016, over $50 million was invested in revitalizing the Hickory Hollow property and 58 tenants occupied the internationally-themed mall (47.8% occupancy) by 2016. Nashville Sit-ins
The Nashville sit-ins, which lasted from February 13 to May 10, 1960, were part of a protest to end racial segregation at lunch counters in downtown Nashville, Tennessee. The sit-in campaign, coordinated by the Nashville Student Movement and the Nashville Christian Leadership Council, was notable for its early success and its emphasis on disciplined nonviolence. It was part of a broader sit-in movement that spread across the southern United States in the wake of the Greensboro sit-ins in North Carolina. Over the course of the Nashville sit-in campaign, sit-ins were staged at numerous stores in the central business district. The Mall at Green Hills is a shopping mall located in Nashville, Tennessee, United States. The mall has more than 100 stores and restaurants on two main floors totaling , including Louis Vuitton, Tiffany & Co., Burberry, Crate & Barrel, Apple Store and Restoration Hardware. The Center is anchored by Nordstrom, Dillard's, and Macy's. History The mall has undergone several renovations and expansions since its opening in 1955 as an open-air strip mall. The original layout contained 112,400 square feet (10,442 square meters) of retail space and included Woolworth and Walgreens.
