CHHA (AM)
CHHA is a Canadian radio station, broadcasting at 1610 AM in Toronto, Ontario. Owned and operated by the San Lorenzo Latin American Community Centre, the station airs a Spanish language community radio format branded as ''Voces Latinas'', along with some programming in English, Italian, Portuguese and Tagalog. CHHA's studios are located on Wenderly Drive in the Glen Park neighbourhood of Toronto, while its transmitter is located in the Port Lands neighbourhood at Toronto's waterfront. Its signal is pointed westward to protect CHRN in Montreal and travelers' information stations (TIS) in the United States. CHHA is the highest-powered station in North America to use the 1610 frequency, which is otherwise reserved for TIS in the U.S. and has been unused in Mexico since 2018. CHEV was a Canadian radio station, which formerly broadcast at 1610 kHz in Toronto, Ontario. A low-power AM station licensed primarily to broadcast special events, the station became best known for airing junior hockey games. History In 1997, BAF Audio Visual Incorporated of Scarborough was given approval by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission to launch the station. As an unprotected low-power station, CHEV was forced to vacate the 1610 frequency in 2004 when the San Lorenzo Latin American Community Centre was awarded the frequency for CHHA, a new Spanish community radio station, although the CRTC renewed CHEV's license conditional on the station finding a new frequency. CHRN is a multilingual radio station which operates at 1610 kHz/ AM in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The station serves as a flagship for Radio Humsafar, an international radio network serving the South Asian diaspora. CHRN is Radio Humsafar's second radio station in the Greater Montreal area, as it also owns CJLV. Radio Humsafar received approval for the station from the CRTC on May 16, 2014. The station will operate at 1610 kHz with a universal transmitter power of 1,000 watts. The 1610 frequency was previously occupied by CJWI from 2002 until 2009, when it relocated to 1410 kHz. The Port Lands (also known as Portlands) of Toronto, Ontario, Canada are an industrial and recreational neighbourhood located about 5 kilometres south-east of downtown, located on the former Don River delta and most of Ashbridge's Bay.
