Red Sea Riviera
The Red Sea Riviera, Egypt's eastern coastline along the Red Sea, consists of resort cities on the western shore of the Gulf of Aqaba and along the eastern coast of mainland Egypt, south of the Gulf of Suez. The combination of a favorable climate, warm sea, thousands of kilometers of shoreline, and abundant natural and archaeological points of interest makes this stretch of Egypt's coastline a popular national and international tourist destination. There are numerous National Parks along the Red Sea Riviera, both underwater and on land. Desert and marine life are protected by several laws, and visitors may be subject to heavy fines for not abiding. Taba, Egypt
Taba ( ar, طابا ', ) is an Egyptian town near the northern tip of the Gulf of Aqaba. Taba is the location of Egypt's busiest border crossing with neighboring Eilat, Israel. Taba was originally developed as a tourist destination by the Israelis with the first hotel opening there in the 1960s, and today it is a frequent vacation spot for Egyptians and other tourists, especially those from Israel on their way to other destinations in Egypt or as a weekend getaway. Foul Bay
Foul Bay (, "uncleaned bay"; ) is a bay on the Egyptian side of the Red Sea, in the Red Sea Governorate. Geography Foul Bay is located slightly north of the Tropic of Cancer. The town which lies at the most inland section of the bay is Berenice ( ar, برنيس, ''Barnīs''). The northern part of Foul Bay is a peninsula called Ras Banas. The ancient ruins of Berenice Troglodytica are located on the bay. Islands Foul Bay has many islands that were formed by an upthrust of rock near the mantle during the convergence of two continental plates under the Red Sea. El Gouna
El Gouna ( ar, الجونة ' , "the Lagoon") is an Egyptian tourist city, owned and developed by Samih Sawiris' Orascom Development, dating from 1989. It is located on the Red Sea in the Red Sea Governorate of Egypt, north of Hurghada. It is part of the Red Sea Riviera, and a host city of the El Gouna Film Festival. El Gouna has 10 kilometers of coastline and consists of 20 islands surrounded by lagoons. The town is 25 kilometers away from the Hurghada International Airport. El Gouna buildings were designed by European and American architects to resemble traditional rural Egyptian architecture such as that found in the Egyptian countryside and in Nubian villages. Berenice Troglodytica
Berenice Troglodytica, also called Berenike ( Greek: ) or Baranis, is an ancient seaport of Egypt on the western shore of the Red Sea. It is situated about 825 km south of Suez, 260 km east of Aswan in Upper Egypt and 140 km south of Marsa Alam. It was founded in 275 BCE by Ptolemy II Philadelphus (285–246 BCE), who named it after his mother, Berenice I of Egypt. A high mountain range runs along the African coast and separates the Nile Valley from the Red Sea; Berenice was sited upon a narrow rim of shore between the mountains and the Red Sea, at the head of the ''Sinus Immundus'', a south-facing bay sheltered on the north by a high peninsula then called ''Lepte Extrema'', and to the south by a chain of small islands scattered across the mouth of the bay. Alshalateen
Shalateen ( ar, شلاتين ' ; also spelled Shalatin and Shalatayn) is the biggest town in the Halaib Triangle, a disputed territory claimed by both Egypt and the Sudan. It is located south of Hurghada and is controlled as the administrative center (''markaz'') of all Egyptian territory up to the border between Egypt and Sudan, including the villages of: * Abu Ramad, to the southeast; * Halaib, to the southeast; * Ras Hadarba to the southeast. Ain Sukhna
Al-'Ain al-Sokhna ( ar, العين السخنة, al-ʿAyn as-Sukhna , "the Hot Spring") is a town in the Suez Governorate, lying on the western shore of the Red Sea's Gulf of Suez. It is situated south of Suez and approximately east of Cairo. History Recent archaeological excavations have shown that there was an ancient Egyptian port and settlement in this area. The site was first brought to attention in 1999 by Professor Mahmud Abd El Raziq. French and Egyptian archaeologists have been investigating this area since that time.
