''Cuong Vu Trio Meets Pat Metheny'' is a studio album by trumpeter Cuong Vu and guitarist Pat Metheny, with additional musicians Stomu Takeishi on fretless five-string bass guitar, and Ted Poor on drums. The album was released on May 6, 2016 via Nonesuch label. Vu had previously been a member of the Pat Metheny Group for two albums and tours before this recording. Reception The AllMusic review by Matt Collar states "Together, the quartet plays a set of original songs that straddle the line between ambient tone poems, exploratory modal jazz, and punk-inflected noise jams". They also selected it as one of their Favorite Jazz Albums of 2016. Cuong Vu
Cuong Vu (Cường Vũ) (born 19 September 1969) is a Vietnamese-American jazz trumpeter. In addition to his own work as a bandleader, Vu was a member of the Pat Metheny Group. He is the first American person of Vietnamese descent to win a Grammy Awards, Grammy Award. He won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album, Best Contemporary Jazz Album award twice through his work with the band. He is currently associate professor and chair of jazz studies at the University of Washington. Biography Born in Saigon on September 19, 1969, Vu immigrated to Seattle with his family when he was six. At 11, he began to play the trumpet. He received a scholarship from the New England Conservatory of Music. Pat Metheny Group
The Pat Metheny Group was an American jazz band founded in 1977 by guitarist and composer Pat Metheny, along with his core collaborating member, keyboardist and composer Lyle Mays. Other long-standing members included bassist and producer Steve Rodby from 1981 to 2010, and drummer Paul Wertico from 1983 to 2001, after which Antonio Sanchez (drummer), Antonio Sanchez became the percussionist from 2002 to 2010. Vocalist Pedro Aznar was also a long-time member, performing with the group from 1984 to 1993. Andrew D'Angelo
Andrew D'Angelo (born November 2, 1965) is an American jazz musician. Career D'Angelo was raised in Seattle, where he met Chris Speed and Jim Black, before he moved to New York City in 1985. He worked again with Speed in Boston, where they collaborated with the guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel in the band Human Feel. He also played in the Either/Orchestra. The band members then moved to Brooklyn in the early 1990s. D'Angelo played in the bands of Erik Friedlander, Bobby Previte, Jamie Saft/Cuong Vu, Reid Anderson, and Ed Schuller in the band Orange Then Blue and began a long collaboration with the drummer Matt Wilson. Patrick Bruce Metheny ( ; born August 12, 1954) is an American jazz guitarist and composer. He was the leader of the Pat Metheny Group (1977–2010) and continues to work in various small-combo, duet, and solo settings, as well as other side projects. His style incorporates elements of progressive and contemporary jazz, latin jazz, and jazz fusion. He has three gold albums and 20 Grammy Awards, and is the only person to have won Grammys in 10 categories. Stomu Takeishi
Stomu Takeishi (born 1964, in Mito, Ibaraki Prefecture) is a Japanese experimental and jazz rock bassist. He is known for playing fretless five-string electric bass guitar and a Klein five-string acoustic bass guitar, often using extended techniques and electronic manipulations such as looping. Career Takeishi began as a koto player. He moved to the United States in 1983 to attend the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. After completing his degree in 1986, he moved to Manhattan to continue his studies at The New School. In the 1990s, he began to achieve prominence as an innovative New York jazz bass player, and critics have noted both his adventurous playing and sensitivity to sound and timbre.
