Criterion Closet
The Criterion Closet is a film closet owned and stocked by The Criterion Collection, a home video distribution company based in New York City with a specific emphasis on licensing, restoring, and distributing "important classic and contemporary films." Located in their office, the film closet contains every title distributed by Criterion, totaling over 1,700 films. Criterion has helped to standardize certain aspects of home-video releases such as Film preservation, film restoration, the Letterboxing (filming), letterboxing format for widescreen films and the inclusion of bonus features such as scholarly essays and documentary content about the films and filmmakers. ''Being There'' is a 1979 American satirical comedy-drama film starring Peter Sellers, Shirley MacLaine, and Melvyn Douglas. Directed by Hal Ashby, it is based on the 1971 novel '' Being There'' by Jerzy Kosiński, and adapted for the screen by Kosiński and the uncredited Robert C. Jones. ''Jules and Jim'' ( ) is a 1962 French New Wave romantic drama film directed, produced and co-written by François Truffaut. Set before, during, and after World War I, it follows a tragic love triangle involving French bohemian Jim ( Henri Serre), his shy Austrian friend Jules (Oskar Werner), and Jules' girlfriend and later wife Catherine (Jeanne Moreau). The film is based on a 1953 semi-autobiographical novel by Henri-Pierre Roché describing his relationship with young writer Franz Hessel and Hessel's wife Helen Grund. Truffaut came across the book in the mid-1950s at a shop in Paris, and later befriended Roché. The author approved of Truffaut's interest in adapting the work. ''All That Jazz'' is a 1979 American musical drama film directed by Bob Fosse and starring Roy Scheider as an obsessive film and stage director. It is a semi-autobiographical fantasy based on aspects of Fosse's life and career as a dancer, choreographer and filmmaker.
