Corner Brook
Corner Brook ( 2021 population: 19,316 CA 29,762) is a city located on the west coast of the island of Newfoundland in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Corner Brook is the fifth largest settlement in Newfoundland and Labrador, and the largest outside the Avalon Peninsula. Located on the Bay of Islands at the mouth of the Humber River, the city is the second-largest population centre in the province behind St. John's, and smallest of three cities behind St. John's and Mount Pearl. As such, Corner Brook functions as a service centre for western and northern Newfoundland. It is located on the same latitude as Gaspé, Quebec, a city of similar size and landscape on the other side of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Corner Brook is the most northern city in Atlantic Canada. Gerry Byrne (politician)
Gerry Byrne, (born September 27, 1966) is a Canadian politician who was a Liberal Member of Parliament from 1996 to 2015 representing Humber—St. Barbe—Baie Verte, Newfoundland and Labrador, and a cabinet minister in the government of Jean Chrétien. Since the 2015 provincial election, he has served as MHA for Corner Brook. Byrne served in provincial cabinet during the Ball government and is currently Minister of Fisheries, Forestry, and Agriculture in the Furey government. Education Byrne received a Bachelor of Science in environmental science from Dalhousie University. Federal politics Byrne was a Member of Parliament from 1996-2015 when he won a by-election in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador to succeed Brian Tobin. Tobin resigned to run in the 1996 Newfoundland provincial election for Premier. He was re-elected in the 1997, 2000, 2004, 2006, 2008, and 2011 elections. The 2011 Canadian census was a detailed enumeration of the Canadian population on May 10, 2011. Statistics Canada, an agency of the Canadian government, conducts a nationwide census every five years. Humber East is a former provincial electoral district for the House of Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Includes the eastern section of Corner Brook as well as Humber Village, Little Rapids, Massey Drive, Pasadena and Steady Brook. There is a mix of urban and rural areas. The district is among the most prosperous in the province. Humber East has elected a series of political heavyweights, including Clyde Wells, Tom Farrell, Lynn Verge and former premier Tom Marshall. Humber West
Humber West is a defunct provincial electoral district for the House of Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador. In 2011, there were 8,403 eligible voters living within the district. The district includes the western part of Corner Brook, as well as the communities of Gallants, George's Lake, Pinchgut Lake and Spruce Brook. The district has elected a member of the governing party in every election since confederation, with the exception of future premier Danny Williams' by-election win two years before he led his Progressive Conservative Party to power. The seat has been held by three former premiers of the province. From 2001 to 2010, premier Williams held the seat, from 1971 to 1979 the seat was represented by premier, Frank Moores and from 1966 to 1971 the seat was held by Joey Smallwood.
