Cordelia Edvardson
Cordelia Maria Edvardson (née Langgässer; 1 January 1929 – 29 October 2012) was a German-born Swedish journalist, author and Holocaust survivor. She was the Jerusalem correspondent for ''Svenska Dagbladet'', a Swedish daily newspaper, from 1977 to 2006. Edvardson reported extensively on the Israeli–Palestinian conflict, remaining a columnist for ''Svenska Dagbladet'' after leaving her post in 2006. Background Edvardson was born in Munich, Germany, in 1929. She was raised Catholic. However, since her father, Hermann Heller, was Jewish, Edvardson was arrested by the Nazis and deported to the Theresienstadt and Auschwitz concentration camps during the Holocaust. Her maternal grandfather had also been Jewish, and converted to Catholicism. After immigrating to Sweden after World War II, Edvardson began her journalism career. Theresienstadt Ghetto Survivors
Theresienstadt Ghetto was established by the SS during World War II in the fortress town of Terezín, in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia ( German-occupied Czechoslovakia). Theresienstadt served as a waystation to the extermination camps. Its conditions were deliberately engineered to hasten the death of its prisoners, and the ghetto also served a propaganda role. Unlike other ghettos, the exploitation of forced labor was not economically significant. The ghetto was established by the transportation of Czech Jews in November 1941. The first German and Austrian Jews arrived in June 1942; Dutch and Danish Jews came at the beginning in 1943, and prisoners of a wide variety of nationalities were sent to Theresienstadt in the last months of the war. Auschwitz concentration camp ( (); also or ) was a complex of over 40 concentration and extermination camps operated by Nazi Germany in occupied Poland (in a portion annexed into Germany in 1939) during World War II and the Holocaust.
