Coorparoo Fire Station
Coorparoo Fire Station is a heritage-listed former fire station at 219 Cavendish Road, Coorparoo, City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It was designed by Atkinson & Conrad and built in 1935. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 11 June 2003. History From about 1931, local progression associations led by C. Beak and W. J. Smout began to lobby to have a fire station established in their area. However, the fire board did not have the funds to establish a new station until March 1935 when they borrowed from the Commonwealth Bank. The fire station was opened on Thursday 26 September 1935 by John Innes Brown, Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly for Logan. The Dennis turbine fire engine at the station was the most modern available. The station served the Coorparoo, Camp Hill and Holland Park areas. Cavendish Road, Brisbane
Cavendish Road is an arterial road in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, linking the suburbs of Coorparoo, Holland Park and Mount Gravatt East. Geography Cavendish Road commences at Coorparoo Secondary College near Bridgewater Creek in Coorparoo and then runs in an approximately south-eastly direction over hilly terrain. It terminates at the intersection with Creek Road in Mount Gravatt East. Although the road appears to continue beyond that point, it becomes Newnham Road. History The road first appears in a survey of Coorparoo in July 1863. A number of the early residents were keen whist players and the book commonly known as ''Cavendish on Whist'' was considered the authority on the game. John Innes Brown (c.1881 – 3 December 1949) was a blacksmith and member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early days Brown was born at Glasgow, Scotland, to John Brown, and his wife Janet (née Kidston). Arriving with his family in 1889, he attended South Brisbane State School before commencing work in the family business as a blacksmith at Coorparoo. Brown was a founding member of the Thompson Estate Harriers Athletic Club in 1900, and the team he captained went on to represent Queensland in the first inter-state cross country championships in Sydney in 1905. The ''Fraser Coast Chronicle'' is an online newspaper serving the Fraser Coast area in Queensland, Australia. It was started as the Maryborough Chronicle, Wide Bay and Burnett Advertiser. History Charles Hardie Buzacott first published the ''Maryborough Chronicle, Wide Bay and Burnett Advertiser'' in Maryborough as a four-page tabloid, in his slab hut in Lennox Street in November 1860. It sold for sixpence and was read from Gayndah in the west and Childers in the north to Gympie in the south. Coorparoo is a suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Coorparoo had a population of 16,282 people. Geography Coorparoo is by road south-east of the Brisbane GPO. It borders Camp Hill, Holland Park, Stones Corner, Greenslopes, East Brisbane and Norman Park. Toponymy Coorparoo was chosen as the name of the suburb at a public meeting on 22 March 1875, before which it was known as Four Mile Camp. The name Coorparoo is likely derived from an Aboriginal name for Norman Creek, probably recorded by early surveyors as ''Koolpuroom''. The word is thought to refer to either a place associated with mosquitoes, or a sound made by the 'gentle dove'. The latter explanation appears doubtful though, as 'gentle dove' may mean the spotted dove, which was introduced to the area in 1912, long after the name Coorparoo was adopted.
