Cookstown (District Electoral Area)
Cookstown is one of the seven district electoral areas (DEA) in Mid Ulster (district), Mid Ulster, Northern Ireland, encompassing Cookstown, the town of the same name and nearby villages. The district elects seven members to Mid Ulster District Council and contains the wards of Coagh, Cookstown East, Cookstown South, Cookstown West, Loughry, Oaklands and Pomeroy, County Tyrone, Pomeroy. Cookstown forms part of the Mid Ulster constituencies for the Mid Ulster (Assembly constituency), Northern Ireland Assembly and Mid Ulster (UK Parliament constituency), UK Parliament. It was created for the 1985 Cookstown District Council election, 1985 local elections, replacing Cookstown Area C which had existed since 1973. It was called Cookstown Central until 2014, and originally contained five wards (Gortalowry, Killymoon, Newbuildings, Oldtown and Tullagh). Mid Ulster District Council (; Ulster Scots dialects, Ulster-Scots: ''Mid Ulstèr Airts Cooncil'') is a local authority that was established on 1 April 2015. It replaced Cookstown District Council, Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council and Magherafelt District Council. The first elections to the authority took place on 2014 Northern Ireland local elections, 22 May 2014 and it acted as a shadow authority, prior to the creation of the Mid Ulster District, Mid Ulster district on 1 April 2015. Ballinderry was one of the three district electoral areas in Cookstown, Northern Ireland which existed from 1985 to 2014. The district elected six members to Cookstown District Council, and formed part of the Mid Ulster constituencies for the Northern Ireland Assembly and UK Parliament. Ian McCrea
Ian McCrea (born 12 June 1976) is a Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) politician who was a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) for Mid Ulster from 2007 to 2016. Background McCrea was born in Magherafelt in 1976. Political career McCrea was elected to Cookstown District Council in 2001, held the position of chairman of the Council in 2007–08 and is a member of Cookstown District Policing Partnership. A former member of the Young Democrats, McCrea is now chairman of the Cookstown DUP Branch, and of the party's Local Government Association, also in Cookstown. A member of the Apprentice Boys of Derry, he also acts as chairman of Coagh United Supporters Club. In 2011 his car was set alight and destroyed outside his house; no group or individual admitted responsibility for the attack.
