Cook County Courthouse (Minnesota)
Cook County Courthouse in Grand Marais, Minnesota, United States, was built in 1911 and designed by architects Anton Werner Lignell and Clyde Wetmore Kelly. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. When Cook County was first organized, county business was conducted in a trading post on a spit of land that extended into Lake Superior. The first real courthouse building was built in 1889 and was a two-story frame building. It later received a one-story addition. The original frame courthouse was seen as "obsolete, limited in space, and far too modest an expression of the county's future," so in 1910, voters authorized the sale of bonds to build a new courthouse. The new building, completed in 1912, was built in the Classical Revival architecture, Classical Revival style and features Ionic order, Ionic columns supporting a cornice. Grand Marais ( ) is a city and the county seat of Cook County, Minnesota, Cook County, Minnesota, United States, of which it is the only municipality. It is on Lake Superior's North Shore. Grand Marais had a population of 1,337 at the 2020 United States census, 2020 census. Before it was settled by French Canadians and before Minnesota's statehood, it was inhabited by the Ojibwe. The Gunflint Trail, a National Scenic Byway, begins in Grand Marais and ends near the border with Ontario. History The Ojibwe name for the area is ''Gichi-biitoobiig'', which means "great duplicate water," "parallel body of water" or "double body of water" (like a bayou), a reference to the two bays that form this large harbor of Lake Superior. In architecture, a cornice (from the Italian ''cornice'' meaning "ledge") is generally any horizontal decorative Moulding (decorative), moulding that crowns a building or furniture element—for example, the cornice over a door or window, around the top edge of a pedestal, or along the top of an interior wall. A simple cornice may be formed with a crown, as in crown moulding atop an interior wall or above kitchen cabinets or a bookcase. A projecting cornice on a building has the function of throwing rainwater free of its walls. In residential building practice, this function is handled by projecting gable ends, roof eaves, and rain gutter, gutters.
