Constance Sheares
Constance Sheares (born 4 October 1941) is a Singaporean arts administrator, curator, and writer. Sheares helped establish the National Museum Art Gallery in 1976, curating its inaugural exhibition and other major exhibitions. Through exhibitions, publications, and acquisitions initiated at the Museum, Sheares helped to shape the basis of art institutions and art historical discourse in Singapore. She was a curator at the National Museum of Singapore between 1971 and 1976, and 1982 to 1988, and later an independent curator and consultant for various organisations. Early life Born in Singapore in 1941, Sheares grew up in a Singapore recovering from World War II. Sheares is the daughter of Benjamin Sheares, a doctor at Kandang Kerbau Hospital who later became the second president of Singapore in 1971, and Yeo Seh Geok Sheares. Choy Weng Yang
Choy Weng Yang () is a Singaporean artist, curator and arts writer and a proponent of the art fraternity in post-independent Singapore. His literary contributions on post-modern arts in Singapore, had helped shaped the contemporary art scene in Singapore. Born 12 July 1930 in Singapore, Choy graduated with a National Diploma of Art UK from Hornsey College of Art in 1962 and received the Art Teachers' Certificate (UK) from the University of London Institute of Education in 1963. The Singapore Art Museum (Abbreviation: SAM) is an art museum is located in the Downtown Core district of Singapore. It is the first fully dedicated contemporary visual arts museum in Singapore with one of the world’s most important public collections by local, Southeast and East Asian artists. Bras Basah Road
Bras Basah Road () is a one-way road in Singapore in the planning areas of Museum and Downtown Core. The road starts at the junction of Orchard Road and Handy Road, at the ERP gantry towards the Central Business District, and ends at the junction with Nicoll Highway, beyond which it becomes Raffles Boulevard. Tang Da Wu
Tang Da Wu (, ; born 1943) is a Singaporean artist who works in a variety of media, including drawing, painting, sculpture, installation art and performance art. Educated at Birmingham Polytechnic and Goldsmiths' College, University of London, Tang gave his first solo exhibition, consisting of drawings and paintings, in 1970 at the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He began engaging in performance art upon returning to Singapore in 1979 following his undergraduate studies. In 1988, Tang founded The Artists Village. The first art colony to be established in Singapore, it aimed to encourage artists to create experimental art. Sembawang
Sembawang is a planning area and residential town located in the North Region of Singapore. Sembawang planning area is bordered by Simpang to the east, Mandai to the south, Yishun to the southeast, Woodlands to the west and the Straits of Johor to the north. The Artists Village
The Artists Village (TAV) is a Singapore-based contemporary art group. It is known as Singapore's first art colony, founded by contemporary artist Tang Da Wu in 1988. TAV is historicised as having produced significant shifts in the history of Singapore's contemporary art, known for its engagement with societal changes and issues through late-1980s and 1990s Singapore, with a particular emphasis on performance art, installation art, and process-based work. Some figures closely associated with TAV, apart from Tang, include Amanda Heng and Lee Wen. TAV's original space from 1988 to 1990 was a chicken farm at Lorong Gambas in Ulu Sembawang, which has since been redeveloped. Anthony Poon
Anthony Poon Kin Soon (; 21 April 1945 – 2 September 2006) was one of the pioneer abstract artists in Singapore best known for his paintings in the ''Wave Series'' which he began working on in 1976. Biography Born in Singapore in 1945, Poon graduated from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) in 1964, and held his first exhibition at the old National Library. Thomas Yeo
Thomas Yeo (born 22 April 1936) is a Singaporean artist. His first solo exhibition came in 1960 at the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry. In 1984 he was awarded the Cultural Medallion. Personal life Yeo is born to an optician father and housewife mother, and has 12 siblings. One of his brothers is former Cabinet minister Yeo Cheow Tong who served in the Cabinet from 1990 to 2006. Career He enrolled in Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts from 1958 to 1960, where he studied with the artists Georgette Chen and Cheong Soo Pieng.
