Conception Bay (Canada)
Conception Bay (CB) is a bay on the southeast coast of Newfoundland, Canada. The population (in 2011) of people living in municipalities (or unincorporated census subdivisions) located along the coast of Conception Bay was 90,490 making it one of the most densely populated areas of the province. Conception Bay is adjacent to the St. John's Metropolitan Area which contains 5 of the 10 largest settlements in the province and is home to over 200,000 people. The smaller communities in Newfoundland may often be referenced by the Bay in which they are located, e.g.: ' Port de Grave, CB'. Geography The bay indents the Avalon Peninsula, opening towards the Atlantic Ocean at its northeast. It is bounded by Cape St. Francis in the south and Split Point near Bay de Verde in the north. German submarine ''U-513'' was a type IXC U-boat built for service in Nazi Germany's ''Kriegsmarine'' during World War II. She was Keel laying, laid down on 26 April 1941 by the naval construction firm Deutsche Werft AG in Hamburg as yard number 309, and Ship commissioning, commissioned on 10 January 1942. Her commanders were ''Korvettenkapitän'' Rolf Rüggeberg (10 January 1942 until 14 May 1943) and ''Kapitänleutnant'' Friedrich Guggenberger (15 May until 19 July 1943). The Dominion Steel and Coal Corporation (also DOSCO) was a Canadian coal mining and steel manufacturing company. Wabana, Newfoundland And Labrador
Wabana is a Canadian town and the largest, and only incorporated, community on Bell Island in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Geography The town is situated on the northeast end of the island and was incorporated in 1950. Bell Island's soil contains red hematite (or iron ore); this resource was the main reason for Wabana's development. In addition to Wabana centre, the municipality consists of three more neighbourhoods, namely West Mines to the west, The Green to the north and The Front (or Bell Island Front) to the southeast, near the ferry terminal. Peter Easton
Peter Easton ( – 1620 or after) was an English privateer and later pirate in the early 17th century. Conflicting accounts exist regarding his early life. By 1602, Easton had become a highly successful privateer, commissioned to protect English interests in Newfoundland. The 'most famous English pirate of the day', his piracies ranged from Ireland and Guinea to Newfoundland. He is best known today for his involvement in the early English settlement of Newfoundland, including the settlements at Harbour Grace and Ferryland from 1611 to 1614. One of the most successful of all pirates, he controlled such seapower that no sovereign or state could afford to ignore him, and he was never overtaken or captured by any fleet commissioned to hunt him down. Buccaneer
Buccaneers were a kind of privateer or free sailors, and pirates particular to the Caribbean Sea during the 17th and 18th centuries. First established on northern Hispaniola as early as 1625, their heyday was from the Restoration in 1660 until about 1688, during a time when governments in the Caribbean area were not strong enough to suppress them. Martinique was a home port for French buccaneers as well as pirates like Captain Crapeau. Originally the name applied to the landless hunters of wild boars and cattle in the largely uninhabited areas of Tortuga and Hispaniola.
