Kochi ( , ), formerly known as Cochin ( ), is a major port city along the Malabar Coast of India bordering the Laccadive Sea. It is part of the district of Ernakulam in the state of Kerala. The city is also commonly referred to as Ernakulam. As of 2011, the Kochi Municipal Corporation had a population of 677,381 over an area of 94.88 km2, and the larger Kochi urban agglomeration had over 2.1 million inhabitants within an area of 440 km2, making it the largest and the most populous metropolitan area in Kerala. Kochi city is also part of the Greater Cochin development region and is classified as a Tier-II city by the Government of India. Cochin Shipyard Ltd (CSL) is the largest shipbuilding and maintenance facility in India. Cochin Shipyard is part of a line of maritime-related facilities in the port-city of Kochi, in the States and union territories of India, state of Kerala, India. The shipyard builds platform supply vessels and double-hulled Oil tanker, oil tankers. INS Vikrant (2013)
INS ''Vikrant'' is an aircraft carrier in service with the Indian Navy. The carrier is India's fourth carrier and the first to be built domestically. It was constructed by the Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL). The name ''Vikrant'' is a tribute to India's first aircraft carrier INS Vikrant (1961), INS ''Vikrant'' (1961). ''Vikrant'' means "courageous" in Sanskrit. The motto of the ship, "जयेम सम् युधिस्पृधः" (Sanskrit), means "I defeat those who dare to challenge me" (English). Ernakulam
Ernakulam () is the central business district of the city of Kochi, Kerala, India. It is the namesake of Ernakulam district. The eastern part of Kochi city is mainly known as Ernakulam, while the western part of it after the Venduruthy Bridge is called as Western Kochi. Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) is a statutory body headquartered in Kadavanthra, Kerala, India, established in 1976. It is responsible for the development planning of the Kochi Municipal Corporation (except two wards), nine adjacent municipal councils, and 21 intervening gram panchayats, covering a total area of 632 km2. The GCDA is one of the two development bodies in Kochi, the other being Goshree Islands Development Authority which oversees development planning of eight island panchayats, covering an area of 100 km2. Thripunithura
Thrippunithura or Tripunithura (Malayalam:തൃപ്പൂണിത്തുറ) is a prominent historical and residential region in the city of Kochi in Kerala, India. Located about 7 km (4 mi) from the city centre, Tripunithura was the capital of the erstwhile Kingdom of Cochin. The descendants of the Cochin royal family still live here. Hill Palace, Tripunithura
Hill Palace is an archaeological museum and palace located in the Tripunithura neighbourhood of Kochi, Kerala. It is the largest archeological museum in the state and was the imperial administrative office and official residence of the Cochin Maharaja. Built in 1865, the palace complex consists of 49 buildings spreading across and built in the traditional architectural style. The complex has an archaeological museum, a heritage museum, a deer park, a pre-historic park and a children's park. The campus section of the museum is home to several rare species of medicinal plants. Marine Drive, Kochi
Marine Drive, officially the APJ Abdul Kalam Marg, is a promenade in Kochi, India. It is built facing the Kerala Backwaters, backwaters. Despite its name, no vehicles are allowed on the walkway. With several shopping malls it is as an important centre of shopping activity in Kochi. The walkway starts from the Kerala High Court junction and continues until the Rajendra Maidan. There are also several jetty, boat jetties along the walkway. The walkway has three bridges: the Rainbow bridge, the Chinese Fishing Net Bridge and the House Boat Bridge.
