Clubsound
Clubsound are a showband from Northern Ireland. Formed in 1970, the band enjoyed particular success during the 1970s and 1980s. The original line-up featured George Jones, Tommy Thomas who wrote much of the comedy material, Dave McKnight, Barry Woods and Alan McCartney. They started in 1955 as a seven-piece skiffle band called Danie Sands and the Javelins. The band later did backing singing before evolving into a comedy cabaret act. Clubsound enjoyed several locally successful singles, including ''Belfast, Belfast'' and ''Shankill Airways''. Members The original lineup featured drummer Bryan "Tommy" Thomas from Wales (died c. 22 April 2022), bassist George Jones, Barry Woods, Alan McCartney and Dave McKnight. The later lineup featured Jones, Woods, McCartney, McKnight, Jimmy Black and Harry Hickland. Early practice sessions would take place outside Jones' house. George Jones (radio Presenter)
George Jones (born 1941, Bloomfield, East Belfast) is a musician and former radio and TV personality from Belfast, Northern Ireland. Born and brought up in the east of Belfast, Jones started entertaining in the showbands era in Northern Ireland. Jones is a founder member of the long-running showband Clubsound. Music career As a teenager, Jones was a member of the band the Monarchs which included his boyhood friend, Van Morrison. Showband
The Irish showband was a dance band format popular in Ireland from the mid-1950s to mid-1980s. The showband was based on the internationally popular six- or seven-piece dance band. The band's basic repertoire included standard dance numbers and covers of pop music hits. The versatile music ranged from rock and roll and country and western songs to traditional dixieland jazz and even Irish Céilí dance, Newfie stomps, folk music and waltzes. Key to a showband's popular success was the ability to perform songs currently in the record charts. Some bands also did comedy skits onstage. The line-up usually featured a rhythm section of drums, lead, rhythm and bass guitars, a keyboard instrument, and a brass section of trumpet, saxophone and trombone. Skiffle
Skiffle is a genre of folk music with influences from American folk music, blues, country, bluegrass, and jazz, generally performed with a mixture of manufactured and homemade or improvised instruments. Originating as a form in the United States in the first half of the 20th century, it became extremely popular in United Kingdom in the 1950s, where it was played by such artists as Lonnie Donegan, The Vipers Skiffle Group, Ken Colyer, and Chas McDevitt. Skiffle was a major part of the early careers of some musicians who later became prominent jazz, pop, blues, folk, and rock performers, The Beatles and Rory Gallagher amongst them. Van Morrison
Sir George Ivan Morrison (born 31 August 1945), known professionally as Van Morrison, is a Northern Irish singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist whose recording career spans seven decades. He has won two Grammy Awards. As a teenager in the late 1950s, he played a variety of instruments such as guitar, harmonica, keyboards and saxophone for several Irish showbands, covering the popular hits of that time. Known as "Van the Man" to his fans, Morrison rose to prominence in the mid 1960s as the lead singer of the Northern Irish R&B and rock band Them. With Them, he recorded the garage band classic " Gloria". Under the pop-oriented guidance of Bert Berns, Morrison's solo career began in 1967 with the release of the hit single " Brown Eyed Girl". After Berns's death, Warner Bros. Records bought out Morrison's contract and allowed him three sessions to record '' Astral Weeks'' (1968). Them (band)
Them were a rock group formed in Belfast, Northern Ireland, in April 1964, most prominently known for the rock standard "Gloria" and launching singer Van Morrison's musical career. The original five-member band consisted of Morrison, Alan Henderson, Ronnie Milling, Billy Harrison and Eric Wrixon. Them scored two UK hits in 1965 with "Baby, Please Don't Go" (UK No. 10) and " Here Comes the Night" (UK No. 2; Ireland No. 2). The latter song and " Mystic Eyes" were top 40 hits in the US. Morrison quit the band in 1966 and went on to a successful career as a solo artist. Despite their relatively few hit singles, the Belfast group had considerable influence on other bands, such as the Doors. The band's 1964 recording of "Gloria" was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999.
