Cluain Conmhaícne
The Cluain Conmhaícne (Conmaicne of the pasture), or Cluain Conmaicne, were an early people of Ireland. Their tuath comprised the entire parish of Cloone, located in the baronies of Maigh Rein (Mohill) and Carrigallen, in south County Leitrim. Origin The Conmhaicne or Conmaicne were a people of early Ireland, perhaps related to the Laigin, who dispersed to various parts of Ireland. They settled in Connacht and Longford, giving their name to several Conmaicne territories. Other branches of the Conmhaicne located in County Leitrim included the Conmaicne of Maigh Rein, Maigh Nissi, and Conmaicne Luchan. Territory Their territory was bounded by native Irish forests on all sides, Conmaiche of Maigh Rein west, Conmaicne of Maigh Nissi south, Conmaicne of Angaile to the east, and Breifne O'Reilly to the north. Annaly
Annaly is an Irish lordship and former principality, named for its conqueror Angaile, ancestor of the Ó Fearghail. The territory of Annaly coincides with modern County Longford and was conquered in the 10th century by Angaile, a King of Fortúatha whose line were chiefs of the Conmhaícne Angaile. Angaile's great-grandson Fearghail was the progenitor of the Ó Fearghail family, who were historically the Princes of Annaly. James Hardiman
James Hardiman (February 1782 – 13 November 1855), also known as Séamus Ó hArgadáin, was a librarian at Queen's College, Galway and an important historian. Hardiman is best remembered for his '' History of the Town and County of Galway'' (1820) and '' Irish Minstrelsy'' (1831), one of the first published collections of Irish poetry and songs. Biography Hardiman was born in Westport, County Mayo, in the west of Ireland. His father owned a small estate in County Mayo. He was trained as a lawyer and became sub-commissioner of public records in Dublin Castle. He was an active member of the Royal Irish Academy, and collected and rescued many examples of Irish traditional music. Cloone
Cloone () is a village in County Leitrim, Republic of Ireland, Ireland. The village is located in the south of the county, just off the R201 road (Ireland), R201 road; its nearest town is Mohill. Its name is an anglicised version of the Irish-language word ''cluain'', meaning 'meadow'. The village is in a townland and Civil parishes in Ireland, civil parish of the same name. History The Plague of Mohill, Justinian plague of Mohill barony badly affected the Cloone area in the 6th century. St Midabaria, Miadhnat or Miodhabhair was a sister of Saint Berach the 6th-century Irish Missionary, she was abbess of a nunnery in Bumlin ( Strokestown), County Roscommon in Ireland. She is venerated as Patroness on February 22 each year. The entry for February 22 in the Lives of the Saints, the name of this saint is phrased as ''Midabarius Rinn Drochidii'' which makes her appear male however, she was also called Midabaria. Saint Berach
Saint Berach of Termonbarry (died 595) was a celebrated Irish saint, whose memory is still celebrated in County Roscommon. He was a disciple of Saint Kevin. Life Berach, and his sister Midabaria, were born at Gort na Luachra in Cluain Conmhaícne, now in County Leitrim. His father was of the tribe of Cinel Dobtha, otherwise O'Hanley of Doohey Hanley, and his mother belonged to the Conmaicne tribe. After his seventh birthday, Berchan was brought to Daigh mac Cairill at Inishkeen, now in county Monaghan, to study. After completing his novitiate, Bercan moved to the Diocese of Elphin where he later built the church at Cluain Coirpthe, now known as Termonbarry or Kilbarry. Muintir Eolais
The Muintir Eolais of Conmaicne Réin were nobles of Gaelic Ireland. For seven hundred years from the 8th century, they lived in and ruled an area roughly conterminous with present-day south County Leitrim. Their territory comprised the lands named and , today the baronies of Leitrim (County Leitrim barony), Leitrim and Mohill (barony), Mohill respectively. The Mag Raghnaill, O'Mulvey, and Mac Shanley rule became increasingly fragmented throughout the 16th century. East Breifne
The Kingdom of East Breifne or Breifne O'Reilly (; , ) was an historic kingdom of Ireland roughly corresponding to County Cavan that existed from 1256 to 1607 in Ireland, 1607. It took its present boundaries in 1579 in Ireland, 1579 when East Breifne was renamed Cavan, after Cavan, Cavan town, and shired into Ulster. Originally part of the older Kingdom of Breifne, East Breifne came into existence following a protracted war between the ruling O'Rourke clan and the ascendant O'Reillys which culminated in the division of the kingdom in 1256.
