Clay Club (NEA)
SculptureCenter is a not-for-profit, contemporary art museum located in Long Island City, Queens, New York City. It was founded in 1928 as "The Clay Club" by Dorothea Denslow. In 2013, SculptureCentre attracted around 13,000 visitors. History Founded in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, in 1928 as The Clay Club, it was located across the street from the Brooklyn Children's Museum. Its founder, sculptor , invited local children and later other artists to share her studio. SculptureCenter soon moved to 8 West Fourth Street in the West Village in 1932 and then, in 1948, to a carriage house at 167 East 69th Street on the Upper East Side, where it operated a school with artists’ studios. The offerings included clay and wax modeling, stone and wood carving, welding, figure studies and portraits. There were are also after-school classes for children. Liz Glynn
Liz Glynn (born 1981) is an American artist. She is originally from Boston and now works out of Los Angeles. Much of her work is sculptural and installation-based, incorporating found objects and materials. Her work deals with institutional critique, collecting practices, antiquity, monument-building, and the concept of material value. Many of her installations encourage public engagement and participatory performance among her audiences. She is represented by Paula Cooper Gallery in New York. Clement Renzi (born as Clement Edward Joseph Peter Renzi) was an American sculptor whose figurative bronze and terra cotta works depict people, human relationships, animals, and birds. His work has been popular with collectors in California's Central Valley and is placed in more than 60 public venues, primarily in that region. Childhood and family Clement Renzi was the third of seven children, born to parents Clemente Renzi and Luisa Guastaferro. The couple had been drawn to Central California's Tulare County because of its resemblance to the landscape of Clemente's native village of Dugenta, Italy. Barbara Lekberg
Barbara Ann Lekberg (née Barbara Ann Hult; March 19, 1925 – February 14, 2018) was an American sculptor. Early life and education Barbara Lekberg was born as Barbara Ann Hult on March 19, 1925 in Portland, Oregon. Her mother was music teacher Mildred Anderson, and her father was in the family lumber business, Melvin Hult. Lekberg attended University of Iowa, studying sculpture under , Philip Guston, and Mauricio Lasansky. She graduated in 1946 with a B.A. degree in sculpture, and in 1947 with a M.A. degree in art history. She moved to New York City in the late 1940s. Katie Ohe
Katie Ohe, (born Katherine Dorothea Minna von der Ohe 1937, near Peers, Alberta) is a Canadian sculptor living in Calgary, Alberta. Ohe is known as one of the first artists to make abstract sculpture in Alberta, and has been influential as a teacher at the Alberta College of Art and Design. She is best known for her abstract and kinetic sculptures. Biography She began her studies at the Alberta College of Art and Design in Calgary (then the Provincial Institute of Technology and Art) 1954 to 1957 under the guidance of pioneer modernist artist Marion Nicoll. Mika Tajima (born 1975 in Los Angeles, California) is a New York-based artist who employs sculpture, painting, media installation, and performance in her conceptual practice. Monika Sosnowska
Monika Sosnowska (born 7 May 1972 in Ryki) is a Polish installation artist. In 2003, she received the Bâloise Prize at Art Basel as well as the Polityka's Passport award given by Poland's most prestigious weekly. Life and career Sosnowska studied at the Painting Department of the University of Fine Arts in Poznań (1993–1998), and the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam (1999–2000). During her final years at the Poznań academy, she found that the "painting started to escape her canvas." She began to create works that played with both two-dimensional painting and three-dimensional space, finally giving up on canvas altogether and instead using space itself as a sort of three-dimensional painting. Katrín Sigurdardóttir
Katrín Sigurdardóttir (born 1967 in Reykjavík, Iceland) is a New York-based artist who works in installation and sculpture. Katrin studied at the Icelandic College of Arts and Crafts, Reykjavík and received a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and her MFA from the Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University. She creates complex structures built to be viewed in exhibition settings but not used as functional architecture. Rita McBride
Rita McBride (born 1960) is an American artist and sculptor. She is based in Los Angeles and Düsseldorf. Alongside her artistic practice, McBride is a professor at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, and served as its director until 2017. McBride is married to Glen Rubsamen, an American painter from Los Angeles. Working at the intersection of architecture, design, and public space, McBride is known for her large scale works and installations, with her wider oeuvre incorporating performance, texts, and smaller scale sculptural work.
