The Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) is a political party in Antigua and Barbuda. The current leader of the party is Gaston Browne, who serves as the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda. The party had previously been led by Lester Bird, who was chairman of the party since 1971, and became Prime Minister and political leader in 1994. The party was founded as the Antigua Labour Party (ALP) by Lester's father, V.C. Bird. The ABLP has traditionally largely been seen as the political arm of the Bird family. With the exception of five years in the 1970s, the ABLP ruled Antigua and Barbuda for over four decades. Sir Rodney Errey Lawrence Williams, (born 2 November 1947) is the current and 4th Governor-General of Antigua and Barbuda. Early life Rodney is the son of Ernest Emmanuel Williams, the former Antigua Labour Party (ALP) parliamentary representative for the St Paul constituency and Irene B. Williams, a professional educator in Antigua and Barbuda. Education Williams attended the Antigua Grammar School in St. John's, upon graduating he taught at his alma mater for a year. He then studied medicine at the University of the West Indies, Mona, where he received his MBBS degree in Medicine and Surgery in 1976. Appointed by the Governor-General, the Attorney-General of Antigua and Barbuda serves as the primary legal advisor to the Government of Antigua and Barbuda. Background A person must be a citizen of Antigua and Barbuda with the right to practice law in order to be eligible to hold or perform duties in the office of Attorney General. The Attorney-General shall be a Minister by virtue of holding the office of Attorney-General, and the provisions of subsections (3) to (6) of section 69 of the Constitution of Antigua and Barbuda shall apply to the office of Attorney-General if he is an elected member of the House at the time of his appointment or later becomes such a member.
