This is a list of cities in Iran, categorized by province. The census years listed below comes from the Statistical Center of Iran. Since 2006, Iran has conducted a census every five years. Cities in bold indicate provincial, county, or district capitals. Iran is divided into 31 provinces and includes a total of 1,245 cities. Khalkhal, Iran
Khalkhal () is a city in the Central District of Khalkhal County, Ardabil province, Iran, serving as capital of both the county and the district. Demographics At the time of the 2006 National Census, the city's population was 38,521 in 9,619 households. The following census in 2011 counted 41,165 people in 11,213 households. The 2016 census measured the population of the city as 39,304 people in 11,501 households. Etymology and history According to Vladimir Minorsky, the name ''Khalkhāl'' may indicate a connection with the ancient Kharkhar kingdom, which existed somewhere in the eastern Zagros Mountains in Neo-Assyrian times. The 14th-century author Hamdallah Mustawfi listed Khalkhal in his '' Nuzhat al-Qulub'' as forming part of the '' tuman'' of Ardabil. Meshginshahr
Meshginshahr () is a city in the Central District (Meshgin Shahr County), Central District of Meshgin Shahr County, Ardabil province, Ardabil province, Iran, serving as capital of both the county and the district. History The 14th-century author Hamdallah Mustawfi mentioned the city, as ''Khiyāv'', as one of the seven cities in the ''Tumen (unit), tuman'' of Pishkin, or Mishkin. He distinguished between the cities of Khiyav and Pishkin: according to him, Khiyav lay to the south of Mount Sablan and had a warm climate, while Pishkin (which he said had formerly been called "Varāvī") was to the north of Mount Sablan and had a damp climate because the mountain shielded it from the sun. Ardabil (, ) is a city in northwestern Iran. Asara () is a city in, and the capital of, Asara District in Karaj County, Alborz province, Iran. It also serves as the administrative center for Asara Rural District.
