Peter Artedi
Peter Artedi or Petrus Arctaedius (27 February 170528 September 1735) was a Swedish naturalist and collaborator of Carolus Linnaeus. He is sometimes known as the "father of ichthyology" for his pioneering work in classifying the fishes into groups. Life and work Artedi was born in Anundsjö in the province of Ångermanland. His paternal grandfather Petrus Martini was the son of a farmer and lived in Hiske (now Umeå). Petrus Martini went to the Royal Academy of Åbo and became a minister in the Church of Sweden. He adopted the Latin surname Archtaedius, becoming vicar in Nordmaling. Artedi's father Olaus Petri also went to Åbo but spelt his surname as Arctaedius. He eventually succeeded the position of his father at Nordmaling. He was married to Helena Sidenia and they had five children of whom only three survived. The 10th edition of ''Systema Naturae'' (Latin; the English title is ''A General System of Nature'') is a book written by Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus and published in two volumes in 1758 and 1759, which marks the starting point of zoological nomenclature. Marcus Elieser Bloch
Marcus Elieser Bloch (1723–1799) was a German physician and naturalist who is best known for his contribution to ichthyology through his multi-volume catalog of plates illustrating the fishes of the world. Brought up in a Hebrew-speaking Jewish family, he learned German and Latin and studied anatomy before settling in Berlin as a physician. He amassed a large natural history collection, particularly of fish specimens. He is generally considered one of the most important ichthyologists of the 18th century, and wrote many papers on natural history, comparative anatomy, and physiology. Giovanni Domenico Nardo
Giovanni Domenico Nardo (4 March 1802 – 7 April 1877) was an Italian naturalist from Venice, although he spent most of his life in Chioggia, home port of the biggest fishing flotilla of the Adriatic. He learned taxidermy and specimen preparation from his uncle, an abbot. He went in a high school in Udine and studied medicine in Padua, where he reorganized the zoological collections. In 1832 he reorganized the invertebrate collection at the Imperial Natural History Museum in Vienna and in 1840 he became Fellow of the Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti, an academy whose aim is "to increase, promulgate, and safeguard the sciences, literature and the arts".
